In June of 2010 I had my wife take our 2004 Saturn Vue awd into Hank Graff Chevrolet of Gladwin MI to be detailed and have an alignment and suspension inspection since we had bought it there.  The vehicle was having some clunking in the front end and some steering vibrations and wandering at expressway speeds.  I do the majority of repairs on our vehicles but did not have time to do this one.

The vehicle had close to 100,000 mile on it so I expected a call saying it would need some front-end parts before it could be aligned.   I expected that and would have paid for it.

The only call my wife received from Hank Graff of Gladwin was that they would need to charge some extra because the rear wheels had to be aligned too. Funny they didnt know this when the appointment was made

We got the car back and I drove it about 2 weeks later on the highway and it had a severe pull to the left, which it never had before.  I got under the vehicle and found that both front control arms had bad rear bushings in them.  The left was completely gone and the right was torn.  Also the left front sway bar link had come apart at the ball and socket. I find out now that these were common complaints with the 2004 Vue.  The left control; arm was so loose that you could move it while all four wheels were on the ground.  I would love to know how exactly a dealership can do a proper alignment with worn out parts like those in the front end.  There were absolutely no tool marks on any of the areas where adjustments would be made.  It would appear that the vehicle was put on the alignment rack and the tech just moved the tires a bit by hand so he would get a computer print out showing a correction in the alignment

The alignment and suspension inspection I paid for should have caught all these problems

I know a proper alignment could never have been done with these loose and broken parts in the front end.  I order the parts and took the vehicle to another licensed mechanic who I trust and the vehicle now has no clunking in the front end and the steering is much more stable.

I would have been perfectly okay with paying for the repairs necessary for a proper alignment but I am not okay with a dealer not doing the work right or even at all.

I would be very careful at Hank Graffs of Gladwin Michigan because they ripped me off on this alignment and inspection and I am sure they are looking to do the same of other people too
