I took a restored 1973 Volkswagon Super Beetle to this place for a couple of repairs, an inspection, and a couple of modern updates.
Let me make CLEAR, with the exception of one part needed for the car: (rear lower passenger side control arm), which was not available,, and had to be utilized from a local junkyard), all other parts needed are readily available from a company who specialize in providing parts for vintage Volkswagons. These are NEW parts, and guaranteed. The company is: Mid America Motorworks (Effingham, Ill.)

On the first visit to Hans Imports, I wanted the lower control arm replaced, (it was, and I have no complaints here). My gas guage was in working condition, but I was told I needed a new "sending unit" (in the gas tank). This part was, and is available from said company, and I asked (and was told), that it would be "over-nighted" at my expense. It was NOT. Infact, after telling me He, (Fulton Omar Martin, owner), replaced the sending unit and charged me $107.787, it does NOT work. I specificly told this man I wanted new parts from "Mid-America Motorworks" ONLY!
There was a limited amount of time I had to have these repairs done, and that was conveyed to Mr Martin....and He agreed. Not only were the repairs NOT completed on time, but He used parts other than ordered by myself.
He did various other things to the engine, and muffler system that I have no complaints about. He completed a Rhode Island State inspection, and placed a 2-year sticker on the vechile.

Here is where it all goes bad.......I decided to update my Volkswagon by removing a bad generator and voltage regulator, and replacing them both, with a NEW alternator (made specificaly for this car), which eliminated a bunch of wiring, and the need for a seperate voltage regulator (as the regulator is internal in the alternator). I also had a new BOSCH coil, and new Interstate battery installed. I also bought a "hard-wire" relay kit from same company. This was supposed to go directly from battery to starter, and eliminate excessive wiring. (I was told by Mr. Martin, that that the starter was already "hard-wired", and he couldnt use the new kit, and yet I was charged for the labor for something he couldnt (or wouldnt) do. He did not return the new kit.
Again, delay afer delay, and I didnt get the car back on the day I was supposed to. Finally, He calls, and tells me I have a blown starter! The starter was FINE! He obviously fried it screwing around, (more than likely not wiring the alternator/battery/starter correctly. He also complained about NOT having any directions (which Mid-America Motorworks confirmed were included), to change the generator over to alternator.

This guy is a smooth talking HACK! He stated to my wife that he gets $98.00 per hour, and its painfully obvious that he "PADS" the bill!
Old Volkswagon Beetles are the simplest of cars to work on, and have a very BASIC electrical system. This guy has a sign out front that says: VOLKSWAGON SPECIALISTS".....BULL!

He charged over $2000.00 for what the mechanic's guide called for NO more than 4 1/2 hours of work. (and I supplied the new parts!)

The car had to be "POP-STARTED" for me to drive it home, and will not start.
I have made a police report, and I am suing this garage for fraud!

Man, your story sounds JUST like my story This guy/shop is a TOTAL JOKE!!!!!! Have you done a search on Hans Imports RI ? SUE HIM ! Just be sure to have all slips from the shop to show the Judge.
Every time I look at my 1966 VW I think of him....which makes me want to vomit.
I bagged him flat out lying in court- did you know his mechanic certification expired several years ago!? he couldnt even change my oil without ripping the bolt threads which now leaks a quart per month.
IDIOT !!!
P.S. He took over that shop just last year from a VW wizz- now, its just a "wizz" on your bank account.
Signed DAN FLEMING !

Today, I had 2 different mechanics look at the car, and both demonstrated that the starter was, and (in fact) is, GOOD! It was wired wrong! I was also shown that the new alternator pulley was NOT lined-up properly with the lower pulley, and the new drive belt was loose, causing the generator/alternator light to glow bright red on the dash! The new alternator kit came with ample spacers for proper alignment. Omar told me that my starter was no good, (and on his word, I had ordered a new one).

I was furious when I went to pick up the car for the second time. Over $600.00 to change an alternator, coil, and ONE wire, (with an in-line relay) from the starter to the battery!
All this has to be done over, and the car will not idle correctly since it was returned.
I was disgusted, and just wanted to get out of there, so I handed Omar my credit card to pay the bill, and he said, (and I quote) " I dont want your credit card, cause you'll probobly stop payment". I assured him I would not. Then he said: "I dont want your money, cause I dont know where this is going". He was paid in full! He'll be in for a big surprize if he plans to deny any of this, as I RECORDED EVERY WORD.......
