I was contacted by someone calling themself "Harry Smith" asking me to be an event photographer for their family reunion in February. I was initially contacted through email with the following message:

"How are you doing? this Harry Smith,am hearing impaired ,I will like to know your availability day in FEB,2018 just 6 hours service, also i will need portrait work done after the photography work is done after the event....I will like you to get back to me with your availability day in FEB,2018 it a family reunion party...I will like you to get back to me Asap and Do you accept credit card payment ?.

Regard"

I have since learned that the "hearing impaired" detail is a red flag for fraudulent people. Additionally, he said he would be having surgery soon. He was also wanting to pay me an extra $1,950 that I would then forward to his event planner. He wasn't willing to pay me via PayPal or Squareup which are my established merchants. He insisted that I enroll in Elavon merchant service, which I did.

After I was approved with Elavon, I contacted him again (via text message, never a phone call) and he texted me a credit card number. He told me to run it for FOUR payments of $1,000, an amount we had never previously discussed. When I told him I needed to see some ID and would prefer to complete this transaction in person, he said he didn't have his ID with him and asked if I could run the card anyway.

I said no and sent him packing. Haven't heard from him since then.
