At the end of 2012 HDB Marine sent me a letter stating that the company was experiencing financial distress. A short while later, I received an invoice to pre-pay annual service for my boat lift which was to be performed summer of 2013. Against my better judgment, I remitted $325 as pre-payment for services to be performed.

I spoke with Keith Shannon who advised that his service personnel were no longer employed by HDB Marine, but that he was personally willing to perform the service. Keith also indicated that he was not particularly familiar with the specific maintenance tasks to be performed.

I requested a specific date for the service to be performed but Keith said that the requested date of service conflicted with his participation in a golf league.

I subsequently informed Keith that I no longer wanted HDB Marine to perform the service and requested my pre-payment refunded. Keith said that he would not refund my pre-payment even though no service had been performed.

HDB Marine Rebuttal- Two Sides to Every Story!

AUTHOR: HDB - ()

POSTED: Saturday, April 26, 2014

To clarify on this matter, the service mentioned as “Pre-Paid” is actually a 2 part service. There is a fall service, and a spring service to be performed. This particular customer was billed after the fall service was completed the same as hundreds of other customers. All we asked was for prompt payment to cover our own financial issues, caused by some of our previous personnel. This issue has been long since resolved. And HDB Marine will be providing those in the Northwest with quality products and service for many years to come. HDB Marine has been in business for over 30 Years and we do everything we can to take care of our customers, and continue to strive to provide the highest quality products and services to all of our valued customers. Our employees take great pride in their work, and are some of the most experienced marine construction workers in the Northwest.

As for the requesting a specific date for the work to be completed, we showed up to perform the spring service and were told that we could not preform the task at that time. When we tried to schedule another time to do the work we were told we could only come back on one specific day. That specific day was coincidentally the one day that we told him did not work for us. Interesting how that was. We try to be as reasonable as possible, and will do everything we can to work with our customers within reason. We were then told he no longer wanted us to work for him, even though we made multiple attempts to work things out with him to complete the spring service. We were then told a full refund was the only way to resolve this issue which was not reasonable, as we made multiple attempts to complete our agreement and the fall service had already been completed.

As all of us in the business world know there are those “special individuals” that you can never please, and at the end of the day would have been better off never working with. These “special individuals” will eventually lose quality contractors willing to work for them. We only wish future contractors the best in dealing with those “special individuals”.
