Several months ago, we were in the process of purchasing a new house less than a half mile outside of the city of Kirksville, MO.  We were imformed by ATT and CableOne that DSL and cable internet was not available.  A local retailer for HughesNet and ATT, called MidAmerica wireless maintained that Satellite provider...HughesNet would be the best, and relatively cheapest option.  That wireless routers would be slower.  My wife who is a online professor found when she arrived arriving here that this was not the case, the web browsing and download is slow, maybe even slower than dial-up, and they slowed you down even more if you go over 200MB of data/day.  We thought we did not have a choice, though.  I eventually purchase an Iphone and ATT plan for my oldest boy to stay in contact better with his girlfriend and other friends from PA.  We found out that the wireless data speeds were much, much quicker than HughesNet.  While most cellphone internet plans limit your data as well, there were wireless plans for the same cost with unlimited data.  Now, we are in the position of cancelling HughesNet with their large cancellation fee (~$400), which we will do, but are not happy about  I understand my contractual obligation, but would never had entered into the agreement if all the options were made available to us.  The retailor, MidAmerica in Kirksville has gone out of business counselored us on the best option, did not give us the best option at all!  In other words, if you have cell service (3G or more), but no cable or DSL service available, there are internet services available that will give you service similar to DSL.  Broadband Q for one.

Sorry for your experience with Hughes Net

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, September 30, 2011

They pull people into their hard to cancel contracts with claims of high speed access and if you just download a LITTLE bit of data, that may be true, but then their "FAP" kicks in and throttles you back to probably less than dial-up for at least 24 hours.

"FAP" (their term is "Fair Access Policy") essentially is used to try to control network overload as the satellite is hopelessly over-subscribed.  It's a sneaky end run to cheat their customers out of what they believe they signed up for.

A tin can and string hook up would possibly perform better than Hughes Net.

It's got to be the most aggravating, disappointing, Ripoff service of them all.
