Today I called to retrieve a domain owned by a client back from Idearc. For some reason they made him transfer registration to use the website they gave him with the superpages ad. The girl on the phone said "there will just be an administrative fee of $50"...huh?!?!

I threatened to complain to ICANN and quickly looked up the registrar of record and it appears they use register.com, so I was making a backup plan in case they didn't relent.

After about 5 minutes on hold she came back and said she can transfer it without the fee.

I'm posting this anyway so that those of you out there can know it is a scam to have to pay to get your own domain back. As a matter of fact, all they had to do was provide the nameservers and we could have initially pointed our domain to those nameservers ourselves, but they insisted they needed to take the domain. LIES. Be careful with LIARS.

If you decide you need to have superpages.com, insist on only the nameservers and retain control of your own domain.

Unfortunately, the charge may still turn up on the company credit card. If it does I'll be back.

No, thank you. Just publish whether or not clients can simply point their domains to your NAMESERVERS without surrendering their domains.

What you're asking me for sounds too much like you want to sue me for posting.

You can provide your clients web sites in concert with your yellow pages listings without making them sign over the domain by just having the NAMESERVERS changed, so the business practice of demanding custody of the domain is questionable.

I think you can just publish the truth here without requiring so much information.
