Here is the Police Report:

Good morning Ms. Ashley,

 

The motel owners name is Don Swan.  Mr. Swan owns Ireland's Rustic Lodges, Gold Beach Inn, and Ireland's RV Park.

 

As you know, the day you reported the theft to us and we met you at the motel, the on-duty clerk was less than cooperative but did state that she had called all their employees and no one knew anything.

 

Sunday afternoon (9/1/2013) I saw Mr. Swan walking down the street so I spoke to him.  Like his employee, Mr. Swan was not very cooperative or concerned.  I told him that he had a media nightmare on his hands and that you were undoubtedly a saavy person with a lot of computer skills.  I suggested that he make things right with you immediately and he totally blew me off and told me that they were not responsible for items left in guest rooms.  I quickly pointed out to him that once they (he or his staff) took control and custody of an item then they were in fact responsible and that clearly someone in his organization had stolen the computer since it was stolen from a private room behind the front desk.  Mr. Swan somewhat taunted me telling me that it would cost you more to sue him than the property is worth.

 

Criminally, we are pretty much going to be at a dead end without some sort of cooperation from the motel owners or staff.  We will obviously keep the case open and can follow up if a particular lead develops but I think you are going to need to deal with Mr. Swan whichever way you see fit.

 

I am sorry we haven't been able to do more for you.  I am very distressed by this incident and frustrated by the lack of ethics by a local business.
