I had just moved to California from Atlanta in hopes of starting a new life. I had worked fast-food before and decided it was not for me. I wanted to find something different. I looked on the world-famous craigslist where it seems many people are finding employment nowadays. Actually you can find anything on craigslist. So I run across this ad for an Entry-Level/Customer Service Position. The ad went on to say they were expanding their company into my area, opening new offices, interviews on a first come, first serve basis, Immediate openings Full time Rapid Advancement No experience necessary Training Provided Team work atmosphere interview that day and you can start immediately. "Salary" was $2000/month and Bonuses to start.

I call, schedule an interview, and was told to come the next day to talk to someone. I ended up answering two ads from craigslist for the SAME JOB. So theres two (probably more) operations going on in the same city. Go the next day to the office where they are operating from. There was upbeat music playing, and 7 other young people are there wondering what they were getting themselves into. I take my seat then the recruiter, "Mario" comes in and pretty much sales us this "Multicare home system". We were not allowed to call it a vacuum because you dont' purchase vacuum's fo rthe price that they were selling them for. He then explains all the good things that go into selling this product, but we were not requiered to sell it. The thing was 52 demonstrations within a month period, and 0 sales required and you got $2000/month. If you sold more than you kept whatever you made. You were promised the $2000 no matter what. He continued about the trips that you get to go on if you sold a certain amount. We were shown pictures from past trips that the other "pushers" had been on. He then went on to describe to us how to take apart and put back together these massive machines.

Then we were told we had to find people we knew to demonstrate how the system works and for them to not only critique us on our performance but to consider purchasing one of these systems. Well since I didn't know anyone here I got away with not having to go through the embarassment. We get to work on Monday fresh-faces and ready to start the day...only to be blindsided. We were told that the appointment setters set the appointments for us and we go to the prospect buyers home to demo the porduct. In my mind the appointment setter is in the office making phone calls and setting them that way. WRONG. The appointment setter was in the field with us knocking down doors and inviting the homeowner to enjoy a room to recieve free carpet cleaning by this revolutionary new cleaning system.

Then we were blindsided again when we were to do this by ourselves. Go door to door inviting homeowners to partake in this free offer...to my surprise, homeowners were taking the bait and inviting these liars into their homes. I go on my first demo with this guy who could barely speak English. The appointment setter had just set up the appointment saying that the wife was the "bread winner" and that we could probably get the sale. When we get there the team leader (who drives the van around and has apparently sold more that anyone) takes us into the home we find out that she has only thirty minutes until she has to be somewhere. I'm thinking to myself from what I know so far that you can't properly show this off in that amount of time. But the guy is persistant after numerous time the homeowner say she is not interested and that she has to go. She then makes a comment that blows me out of the water: "If I would have known that you were going to try to sell me a vacuum cleaner, I wouldn't have let you in. I thought I was going to get a free shampoo."

So pretty much the only reason why the homeowners are making these appointments is because they are only interested in the free shampoo cleaning. I then FINALLY had a question that I should have asked a for long time but it was: What is the negative out of all the positive because it all seemed "too good to be true". Which everything that is normally is. The only thing that they could tell me was the constant rejection that they had to deal with on a daily basis. THAT was a true statement if anything they said was. Constantly we were told to go away, not interested or something along the lines. Out of ten houses we knocked on, one person would be interested in receiving the free carpet cleaning. All in all if I would have known from the beginning what I knew then, I probably wouldn't have signed up for it in the first place.

But being as naive as I am, I too like the many consumers who have bought this product had taken the bait. I mean the "Kirby", which it has come to be know between me and another sucker I made friends with while working there, is a great "Multi-Care Home System" or whatever you want to call it. It's just the numerous consumer ethics that are violated that bothered me. To my knowledge soliciting was against the law. I just moved here so I have not gotten the full grasp on what is what, but that's one that is comon sense that you can't go door-to-door anymore trying to hawk products.

So I say to all the naive people like me looking for job, don't settle for anything and do your research beforehand. Like I should have done. The funny thing is that I went back to craigslist to find a job only to answer ANOTHER ad for ANOTHER shady company for Larry Kahn. I came home to look up the company and found a link to this great site that has opened my eyes to that company and the Kirby shisters.
