A mouse got into the fuse box of my 2008 Toyota Tundra, made a nest, and chewed through some wires.  The truck would turn over but not start.  Other electrical items such as the horn and odometer did not work either.  I spliced the chewed wires together with wire crimps and the truck still would not start.

I called several dealers and asked what the worst case scenario would beto fix my problem.  The consensus was around $4,000 if the entire wiring harness needed to be replaced.  I went with the nearest Toyota dealer to me which was Jeff Wyler Toyota of Clarksville, Indiana.

I had the vehicle towed to the dealership and explained that a mouse had chewed though 4 or 5 wires and I would like a diagnosis and a repair estimate.  I left the fuse box unassembled to save on some labor charges and so they could see the damage.  The next day I was told that their diagnosis was that a mouse had chewed through some wires and they said that they were going to charge me a diagnosis fee.  When I objected, they said that there would not be a charge for the obvious, and if I left it another day they would give me a repair estimate.

I was told the next day that the mouse had chewed in a junction area that required replacement of the entire harmess at a price of $9,000.  I told them that if I could get a decent trade in for my truck that I would buy a new one.  I was was told that the $9,000 would deducted from any trade in value.

I had my truck towed back to my house and removed the wire splicing that I had done by crimping the wires, and soldered them instead.  I plugged in all of the wires that I had removedfrom the fuse box and the truck fired right up with the horn and odometer working!

I notified their corporate office in Cincinnati, Ohio, but never received any sort of a response.  I received a mass mailing from Jeff Wyler Toyota of Clarksville a short time later asking me to trade my Tundra in.  I called the sales manager and asked him to take me off their mailing list, as I would not be doing any business with them.  He replied that was aware of what had happened, since he had seen the letter I had written to corporate.
