To start out, the check was written and cashed for over $1000 to a Christopher Pritt in bubbly, girly handwriting not resembling mine in the slightest and a signature also done in a polar-opposite fashion. If that isn't frusterating enough, Chase Bank cashed the check at one of their branches for this person, presumably on camera, and insread of pursuing the person guilty of fraud and forgery, blames the incident on me by telling me I've neglected to "lock up my checks" and denies reimbursing me the money.

I can only talk to the fraud department over the phone where they hang up on me. I asked the representative where she keeps her checks, and she said she keeps them "in her purse", which I doubt is made out of iron and locked as they apparently expect their customres to do. I've asked how they come to these decisions, and I'm told that their policies are "not for customers to know". I've never had this happen to me before, as I am not a fan of checks, but never would I have thought that a banking institution would ever handle it this way. I am an intelligent and reasonable person who doesn't go through life complaining in order to get my way, but I would have absolutely thought that Chase would be reimbursing my money that I assume is insured and pursue the actual perpetrator instead of sticking their customers with the consequences of their failure to compare a signature on a check before cashing it.

Everything I've read online and heard from bankers at branches seem to point to this being highly unusual for the bank to refuse reimbursing a customer their money in such an event and I am out of ideas and options, so I have ended up pulling my money out and walking away at a loss.

File a police report

AUTHOR: Florida Native - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, October 22, 2018

Make sure to file a police report about the theft of your check(s) and the subsequent cashing of the check at Chase. Look up the best procedures for reporting stolen checks.

Do you have more than one missing check? Make sure to place stop payment of these checks.

Consider having the checking account number changed or even change banks especially given that Chase didn't do anything to help you mitigate the damage from the stolen check.

What I find really odd is that the teller at Chase didn't compare the signature on the presented check with the account signature. You said the check signature doesn't resemble your signature at all. Could be the teller and the check casher were working together as it is normal procedure to compare the signature on the check with the account holder's signature.
