I had attended Kaplan University beginning in the fall of 2004 and graduated in 2006. I had chosen a two year associates degree program in the criminal justice courses that Kaplan offers. When I was first notified by a financial advisor at Kaplan, they told me that the program that I chose would cost me about 11,000 all togethere with tuition and books. He also told me that I would have six months after graduating to find a job and then begin repayment once the six months expired. Plus he said that I would only have to pay about 50 a month. After graduating I started looking for a job that fell under my area of study, but to my surprise everything that Kaplan told me I would qualify for was a lie because not only would I have to attend college for at least two more years, but also my degree credits aren't accepted in Md. Wonderful I thought. Since then they have sold my loans several times, which have accumulated so much interest that they have trippled in amount. I am a low income mother of two, and they have taken all of my husbands and my tax returns, and now they are telling me that they are going to start garnishing my wages. I am currently disputing the situation, but I am sure that since the "judge" that is looking over my case works directly for these companies, that I will have no avail in the situation. I am open to all suggestions, and if anyone who is going through these similar situations is ready to take action against these scam artists, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from u.

First of all, I'm not sure the advisor lied to you (although that surprises me since many of the reports here describe blatant lies told by admissions and financial aid personnel). You need to contact the owner of your loans and/or the Department of Education student loan division to see what your options are. There are repayment plans in place for people like you who can't afford the minimum payment - deferment, forebearance, etc.

Second, it's possible that some of your credits WILL transfer, depending on the program. As a last resort, you could enroll again in Kaplan and continue on through their Bachelor's degree in criminal justice. But I would check with potential employers first to see what they think about Kaplan graduates.
