Kool Alaskan Malamutes slick puppy farm Ionia County Michigan

In May 2008 we purchased a puppy from Kool Alaskan Malamutes.  We named the puppy Shiya.  She is 70% Alaskan Malamute and 30% Siberian Husky.  At the time we had a ten year old pure bred Siberian Husky (a rescue) & a four year old AKC Registered Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

We were hesitant to pay more for a mixed breed than we did for the Corgi, but after many emails and phone conversations with Pat Kool we decided Shiya would be perfect for our family.  She has been well worth the investment!  Kool Alaskan Malamutes breeds for the qualities people want such as loving, gentle, appearance, behavior, etc.  They have strict policies owners must adhere to & are very careful to match dogs to their prospective owners for a good match.

While we have had numerous issues with the Corgi (including lying to us about a defect in his inner eyelid), his breeder has done little to help us resolve the issues or find a new home for him when we thought we could no longer handle him.

Unlike the Corgi breeder, Kool Alaskan Malamutes follows up on the dogs they sell. They have stayed in contact with us and are always available to provide assistance if and when we need it.  If we did have a situation with Shiya like we have had with the Corgi, they would have not only helped us find a new home for her, they would have taken her back!  In our opinion, if Lori (who wrote the report we are writing this rebuttal about) had contacted Kools, it is likely they would have taken the dog back if they could not provide solutions to the issues she claims to have had.

We have recommended them to other people numerous times and will continue to do so.  We would gladly purchase from them again.

I bought a 1/2 malamute 1/2 siberian puppy from the Kool's in  Jan. 2005.Pat Kool was very helpful in choosing a puppy from the litter,I didn't want a hyper husky and wanted a grey male with blue eyes.There were 2 males in the litter and the customer before me had 1st choice between the 2 blue eyed males-one was very energetic-the other was fairly laid back-I informed her I would take the laid back one if he wasn't chosen.Lucky me, they chose the energetic one and I went to pick up "Jingles" as soon as he reached 8 weeks old(which she insisted I do and I fully agree with the theory that puppies should stay in their litter for 8 weeks)I was introduced to Jingles' father Galaxy and then his mother Hurricane.Both dogs were happy and healthy.Jingles has been a pure joy-he has the best personality and has been very healthy.The Kools gave me a folder which contained  information about him, his family, his shots-I also agreed to give them first chance at finding him a new home if I ever had to give him up.I don't understand that if Lori who filed a complaint was unhappy with her dog why didn't she take her back?Over the years I have enjoyed checking out the new puppies since they have the best website and was happy to see the move they made to the country and all the dogs have big fenced in areas to interact and play.Malamutes can sometimes be dog and cat aggressive-after looking on rescue websites for a husky there are quite a few that don't get along-in fact the humane society in our area will not let you adopt a cat if you own a husky and vice versa.Jingles on the other hand loves other dogs and is perfectly fine around cats.And not too long ago the Kools did have some older malamute pups that liked cats!Also when I talked to Pat about puppy personalitys she explained to me that when they had a shy puppy her kids will work extra with it to boast its confidence.So when I read this complaint the thing she left out was how did her female malamute react to the new puppy in their home?I'm wondering if maybe her female did something to really frighten this new puppy when it first came-maybe she didn't see it or catch it.Dominant females can be quite aggressive towards another female and it seems strange that her description of the puppy -very sweet ,licking ,kissing and playing with her female all took place when they introduced them in a neutral territory -but when they got home the pup did a complete turn around-maybe she sensed something and it frightened her-but if it was so bad-why didn't they return her right away?She was free after all and maybe being in this home with this female was not the right place for her.Some mals just do not get along with other dogs.My sister-in-law had a little westie that could never get along with other dogs-she once attacked a german sheperd-the next one she had loves other dogs-its not the breeders fault.Also Lori states that they tried to get her to take a male-and I've often heard that if you are going to have 2 dogs, its better to have a male and a female.I've had quite a few dogs of various breeds and a dog I raised from a pup with 2 other females dogs in the house could never get along with a older female samoyed pup my sister brought home-we had to give the pup away-sometimes you just can't make it work.But we certainly didn't blame the woman she got the pup from and the samoyed went to live with my uncle who had a male samoyed.And all dogs were happy.The end Alice Hauser

Then, Jolene Houghtaling, owner of Hudsons Malamutes & Huskies, served lawsuits on other breeders with the false witness of Dawn McClellan, owner of Kiskakon Malamutes located in Allen, MI, to get back at these breeders. Both Jolene Houghtaling and Dawn McClellan lied under oath at one of the lawsuits.

Jolene Houghtaling, owner of Hudsons Malamutes & Huskies, also is using domain names for Cascade Alaskan Malamutes and Wakon Alaskan Malamutes in order to get puppy buyers to come to her rather than go to them. This is unethical and shady.

4. Lies about her dogs weights to sell her puppies.

5. Swindles Malamutes from unsuspecting owners to capture all of the Malamute bloodlines.

Wildpaw Malamute forum states that nothing negative is being said on their forum about Kool Alaskan Malamutes, but please read the following email excerpts from a Malamute rescue group and emails from a previous puppy buyer who is/was a part of Wildpaw Malamute forum. All email addresses have purposely been omitted. The name of the Malamute rescue worker has been also purposely omitted. Maybe nothing negative is being said on Wildpaw's forum itself about Kool Alaskan Malamutes, but the members of Wildpaw Malamute forum are clearly saying terrible things about Kool Alaskan Malamutes:

We would love to find Sarge a playmate as his sister is getting a little older now and would much rather relax on the couch with us than run around and wrestle with Sarge. Unfortunately, we can only afford about 200-250 for another dog, so if you have any puppies that haven't found homes yet and their prices drop a little bit, it'd be great if you could let me know. Like I said, we would love to have a new puppy in the house. Thanks so much for your time. Britney Behling"

On May 26, Britney wrote an email to the Malamute rescue stating that they had another male dog now, obviously adopted/bought after the February 22 email from Britney to us that is seen above.

So, this great Malamute rescue worker took HER time and HER gas money to rescue Sarge and drive him to us shortly after the above email, and Sarge is STILL with us as of 8/23/09. Not only are Wildpaw Malamute forum members saying terrible things about Kool Alaskan Malamutes, but their own members are dumping Malamutes in animal shelters to be killed.

I stumbled upon the Kool Malamutes accidently.

I'm laying out the background for finding Kool's...
I had purchased a 'malamute' from a Tennesee breader circa June 2004. Our buddy died quite suddenly just after his 4th birthday. He had always had health problems. However, he got the best vet treatment money and friendship can buy.
He went from a healthy 150 pound malamute mix to a dead dog in 48 hours. We were stunned and our vets just as stunned and crushed as we were. He was loved by all and our vets always treated him as their own. Our grief was overwhelming.
There was a huge hole in our lives.

I was just surfing Mal sites and stumbled upon Kool's. They had some pups and some adult animals that looked just like a Mal-Sam mix I had for 13 years that was the predecessor of the Tennessee Mal.

So I called the Kools and spoke briefly with Mr. Kool. He told me that I really needed to speak to Pat. Later on in the day, Pat Kool returned returned my call. I told her what had happened some 8 months prior, and that I was considering acquiring another Mal (actually one of her Sam-Mal mixes). She told me I needed to fill out her questionaire before we could speak about purchase. The questionaire was very thorough. I submitted it. Pat emailed me back with more questions she would like answered. I did that. She also wanted to speak with my vets if possible. I said sure and informed my vet that they would be receiving a call from a breeder concerning how we cared for our dogs. She did indeed contact my vets. I went through 3 grueling phone interviews with Pat. She apologized, but she wanted to know how her pups would fare with us.

I thought about it and it occured to me that she was committed to placing her pups in the best of homes, and that they would receive the best care and love.

She finally agreed to sell me a pup. I told her I wanted a Mal-Sam mix, preferably white with biscuit markings. She told me she had a litter coming around the first of December. We agreed on the price, I first in line for pick of the litter. I wired her the deposit and received a statement from her with in days. The litter arrived and Pat immediatly sent pictures of the pups feeding. I saw the one I wanted almost right away. Once a week she sent pictures and updates. She also provided me with the OFA certs for the daddy and mama. We spoke by phone at least once a week as well.

Finally, it was time for Orvis to come home to the Mississippi Coast. Pat shipped Orvis to our local airport about 30 minutes away.

Orvis arrived in a rather expensive crate, bedded in towels, clean, healthy, but just a tad dissoriented. He sat in my wife's lap with a heavy towel (ours) all the home...I might add he tried to slip into my lap as well.

Orvis came into our home that he would share with two rescue dogs we have. He fit right in.

He's 7 months old now. About 80 pounds, smart and sharp...A true joy and a wonderful puppy. He's almost magic....

We still stay in touch with the Kools and send them updated images and just chat.
Pat Kool is a good and caring person. She is devoted, at least to us, and loves to hear how Orvis is doing. I have never known a breeder that showed so much concern.

My wife and I are old enough to know that Orvis will be our last 'big dog'.
However, I would highly reccomend Kool's to anyone that wants a good dog and a breeder that cares about her pups...

Positive Experience with Kool Alaskan Malamutes!!

I am writing because I want to make people aware of my positive experience with Kool Kennels. After recently losing my beloved husky/chow mix to a brain tumor (not purchased from Kool Alaskan Malamutes), I had been looking for a few months for a new addition to my family. Thankfully I stumbled across Kool Kennels on the internet and wrote to Pat Kool. She was very compassionate about my loss and incredibly helpful and thorough in questioning everything about me that would affect placement of one of her puppies in my home. I also felt very comfortable asking her questions and she responded within a day (usually within a few hours) of my many emails. Most people may have been frustrated with the 30+ emails, but not Pat, she was willing to answer all my questions and was especially accommodating. I asked to get the puppy at 7 weeks old, and she made special arrangements to bring the puppy in early to the vet so I could drive (from NY to Michigan) to pick up my puppy. That's right, I didn't want to wait 8 weeks to ship the puppy and it was very important to me that I find the right puppy that I could sense a bond with. Also, I have cats and I didn't want an older dog to think of them as prey. She said I could have pick of the litter, and remained true to her word.


When I got to the Kennel, Jim Kool and his daughters greeted us warmly and brought out Bella (the mommy of the puppy we were strongly leaning towards). What a wonderful dog! She immediately came over to me and my father and was kissing us happily. She was clean, happy and very good natured and obviously well cared for. Then we were allowed to play with 2 puppies from squishy's litter. All white puppies who were also very clean, happy and taken care of. Jim answered all of our questions, offered to show us around and see the father of the puppy we were leaning towards. We were given plenty of time to make our decision and to just play with the puppies.


Our puppy was given a bath and brought out to us swaddled in a towel and was the cutest thing EVER! She was so well behaved on the 12 hour ride home, I was amazed, there are people who are less well behaved in the car than that puppy. I'd like to add, I read the negative rip off reports right before I went to pick up my puppy and I was genuinely concerned if not terrified that I was going to walk into a puppy mill situation. Thankfully, that was NOT the case!!! People looking to purchase puppies from Kool Alaskan Malamutes should not be swayed by the negativity splashed all over this forum, I was just there and didn't see or experience anything negative at all. And after 12 hours in a car and having the posts on this site in the forefront of my brain I was hyper-vigilant about any poor treatment of animals or deplorable conditions I might encounter. In summation, I don't think anyone will be disappointed by getting a puppy from Kool Kennels. They are the most beautiful, happy, healthy and wonderful dogs and the conditions in which they were kept looked good to me. I am a huge animal rights advocate and I saw nothing but loving, caring dog owners in the Kools. In fact I'm definitely looking to get another puppy from them in the future since our puppy has already infused the house with so much joy and laughter. I can't speak for others, but personally, my experience was wonderful. I'm reminded of that and how thankful I am that I found them every time I see my little puppy's face.

Positive Experience with Kool Alaskan Malamutes!!

I am writing because I want to make people aware of my positive experience with Kool Kennels. After recently losing my beloved husky/chow mix to a brain tumor (not purchased from Kool Alaskan Malamutes), I had been looking for a few months for a new addition to my family. Thankfully I stumbled across Kool Kennels on the internet and wrote to Pat Kool. She was very compassionate about my loss and incredibly helpful and thorough in questioning everything about me that would affect placement of one of her puppies in my home. I also felt very comfortable asking her questions and she responded within a day (usually within a few hours) of my many emails. Most people may have been frustrated with the 30+ emails, but not Pat, she was willing to answer all my questions and was especially accommodating. I asked to get the puppy at 7 weeks old, and she made special arrangements to bring the puppy in early to the vet so I could drive (from NY to Michigan) to pick up my puppy. That's right, I didn't want to wait 8 weeks to ship the puppy and it was very important to me that I find the right puppy that I could sense a bond with. Also, I have cats and I didn't want an older dog to think of them as prey. She said I could have pick of the litter, and remained true to her word.


When I got to the Kennel, Jim Kool and his daughters greeted us warmly and brought out Bella (the mommy of the puppy we were strongly leaning towards). What a wonderful dog! She immediately came over to me and my father and was kissing us happily. She was clean, happy and very good natured and obviously well cared for. Then we were allowed to play with 2 puppies from squishy's litter. All white puppies who were also very clean, happy and taken care of. Jim answered all of our questions, offered to show us around and see the father of the puppy we were leaning towards. We were given plenty of time to make our decision and to just play with the puppies.


Our puppy was given a bath and brought out to us swaddled in a towel and was the cutest thing EVER! She was so well behaved on the 12 hour ride home, I was amazed, there are people who are less well behaved in the car than that puppy. Upon review of Lori and Jeff Rago's adoption application in June 2008, Kool Alaskan Malamutes turned Lori and Jeff down for not having a fenced-in yard, for having 2 cats, and for having a female Alaskan Malamute, all which are fully against Alaskan Malamute rescue groups' standards for successfully young adult and adult Malamute adoptions. After Lori Rago BEGGED Pat Kool over and over again to adopt the female Malamute being offered for free, Kool Alaskan Malamutes reluctantly agreed to let Lori bring her female Malamute named Venus over to meet our Malamute female that was for adoption. Upon seeing that all went well with the meeting of the 2 Malamutes, Kool Alaskaan Malamutes agreed to give the Ragos a chance at adoption of our Malamute that they begged us to give them. This was on 6/28/08. The Ragos promptly named their newly adopted Malamute Luna.

Right now, I'm pretty certain it's me that's more trained than her, but there have been no accidents and she already seems to know what "do you have to go outside" means. Have you taught her to wait for people to go through a door first? I have been amazed that she will wait for me to go in the house first!

2nd full day went pretty well. I worked on obedience with both Venus and Luna. We played a game too. We have a giggle ball toy that Venus used to love to play fetch with. Both dogs took turns to run after it and play with it while the other had to sit and stay. When I'd determined that time was up, I either had Venus bring it to me (well, sort of) LOL she drops it near me so it rolls to me and when Luna had it, I just told her to drop it, We also worked on sit stays and down. AND, wouldn't you know it, that as soon as we are being heavily harassed by Jolene Houghtaling of Hudson's Malamutes because we have evidence against her of crimes that she has committed that we are about to turn into the authorities, that we get 2 Rip-off Reports against Kool Alaskan Malamutes within 6 days of each other!! A coincidence??? We never even heard of the Rip-off Report until 2/22/09. And, here comes on the first Rip-off Report 14 months AFTER Dawn bought her puppy, and the second Rip-off Report comes on 8 months AFTER Lori adopts her young adult from Kool Alaskan Malamutes! Again, I say: A coincidence??? Could it be that since Jolene Houghtaling of Hudson's Malamutes receives $2000 to $2500 per puppy that she is paying Lori, who has been in desperate need of money, to write this very negative Rip-off Report????

Why You Shouldn't Buy That Puppy on the Internet

A Google search of puppies for sale produces numerous puppy merchant websites (see bottom of page). But please do not buy a puppy over the internet. Many of these puppies are coming from puppy mills that sell directly to the public or that raise dogs, for the most part, for resale to pet shops (USDA licensed facilities). Reputable breeders do not sell puppies to families they haven't met in person. They do a thorough screening of potential buyers of their puppies. They provide health guarantees and provide health clearances for genetic defects inherent in the breed. It is not common to see kennel cough, coccidia, giardia, ear and eye infections, upper respiratory infections and worms in puppies that come from reputable breeders.

Save a Life

Every year, animal shelters destroy millions of dogs -- including purebreds and puppies -- and cats. PLEASE adopt a companion animal from your local shelter, humane society, rescue organization or veterinarian. In addition, many pet supply stores, such as Petsmart or Petco, sponsor adoption days. You can also find animals to adopt at www.petfinder.com, www.pet-ark.com and www.pets911.com.

CAPS Complaints

CAPS receives consumer complaints from people who have purchased puppies over the internet. Most of these puppies have mild to very serious medical problems, including hereditary defects. On May 11, 2006 CNN aired a lengthy segment entitled, Sick Puppies Dog Some Online Purchasers. In this story on internet puppy sales, CNN Consumer Correspondent Greg Hunter interviewed CAPS President Deborah Howard, who addressed the issues involved with internet puppy buying and showed video footage of puppy mills that sell to The Hunte Corporation, the largest puppy brokerage facility in the country. The story focused on Celebrity Kennels (aka Wizard of Claws) in Florida, who obtain many of their puppies from Hunte. Celebrity Kennels sells puppies both through a strip mall store front, where they show puppies to consumers who sit in a waiting room, and over the internet. Just because pet shops and online sellers have celebrity customers doesn't mean that these puppy merchants obtain puppies from reputable breeders.

Summary of a few CAPS' Internet Puppy Complaints

North Country Pets (www.mixedbreedpups.com), Ironton, Minnesota

Pages listing litters and upcoming litters immediately arouse suspicion that this breeder has a puppy mill. There are numerous dogs and puppies at this facility. The owners deliberately cross breed their dogs to produce mixed breed puppies, also know as "designer" dogs. Another indication of a puppy mill: the owners do not allow prospective buyers on the premises, claiming that humans transmit diseases to puppies. In fact, the opposite is true. Dogs have certain worms and illnesses that can be transmitted to humans (for example, roundworms, sarcoptic mange and giardia). The following paragraph is quoted from their website:

Can we visit and see the pups? - We used to answer this with a resounding YES! However, we recently had an experience with a pup that became sick shortly after going to her new home. The pup recovered nicely, but the only way this pup could have been exposed to this virus was through casual contact with visitors, as we have NEVER dealt with this virus before. No, you don't need to worry about getting a pup from us, but we really do need to safeguard the health of our puppies, for the puppies' sake, our sake, and the buyer's sake. Unfortunately, even the most diligent, clean, well-meaning visitors can bring a disease to our kennel that can spell disaster for our puppies. Think of it this way - hospitals don't allow visitors into the nursery area. Baby and Puppy immune systems are not fully functional for months.

And yet another sign of a mill is the fact that the puppies are not raised in a home:

Are the pups raised in the house? - No. Frankly, no-one could have litters of puppies like this in a clean, healthy, environment in the house. And, we have a small grooming shop and boarding kennel, so we're at work in our kennel anyway. Mike and Lucy generally begin their day with the puppies at about 6 am, and finish up about 5 pm, with a final walk for the dogs at about 9 pm. The kids, Elizabeth (12), Charles (5), Rachel (3), and Eleanor (2) love to play with the pups. The babysitter has a scheduled time to bring the three little ones out the "shop" to play with puppies every day.

Next Day Pets (www.nextdaypets.com)
Breeders: Tim and Stacy Brock, Rocky Comfort, MO - 43A-3120 c**k-a-poo arrived with Upper Respiratory Infection, Hookworm, Coccidia, ear mites and runny eyes.

This website, like many other puppy sale sites on the internet is nothing more than a place for sellers to post their puppy litter ads and websites. We have looked up the names of a number of breeders selling on this site on the USDA breeder and dealer directories, and most of them have USDA licenses. This means they are puppy mills that supply puppies to the pet shop industry. These are the types of facilities that CAPS investigates on a regular basis.

Puppy Find (www.puppyfind.com)
Importer: Celtic Cavaliers (www.celticcavaliers.com), Palatine, IL
The importer, who is based in the Chicago area, specializes in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that she imports from Ireland. She claims: "Some of our pedigrees include top bloodlines..." Ireland has numerous puppy farms (puppy mills). Cavalier King Charles Spaniel had pneumonia, coccidia and giardia. The puppy has an open fontanel and is having seizures.

Here is what CAPS board member, Dr. Don Allen, DVM, wrote to the consumer who purchased the very sick Cavalier puppy:

The "breeder" you are dealing with is simply an unscrupulous puppy mill retailer who buys from any source she can find for a pittance and sells for enormous profit. She probably never even sees some of the dogs she buys and sells. I also doubt that her vet examined this puppy. The vet has a conflict of interest. Of course he is paid a fee for his services, and he values that extra income. So he passes nearly every pup. You should file a complaint with the Illinois State Board of Veterinary Medicine (search online) in that he has violated state veterinary code. Two vets in NJ had their licenses suspended for just this thing. It may be good to also file a complaint in Virginia with their veterinary board. You might also file consumer complaints with both states' attorneys general offices (also most are online). Too bad you can't also turn her into the IRS, because I have little doubt that she is claiming all her income.

The open fontanel generally closes shortly after birth on any animal. This is a major defect in your dog. Also, seizures are an indication of inherited epilepsy. There is no test for epilepsy, as it is generally diagnosed through the history of seizure events.

In any event, hang onto Kassidy. She needs your love and compassion. Its not her fault, and I'm afraid her mother will never see a gentle hand.

Here is what CAPS board member, Dr. Don Allen, DVM, wrote to the consumer who purchased the very sick Cavalier puppy:

The "breeder" you are dealing with is simply an unscrupulous puppy mill retailer who buys from any source she can find for a pittance and sells for enormous profit. She probably never even sees some of the dogs she buys and sells. I also doubt that her vet examined this puppy. The vet has a conflict of interest. Of course he is paid a fee for his services, and he values that extra income. So he passes nearly every pup. You should file a complaint with the Illinois State Board of Veterinary Medicine (search online) in that he has violated state veterinary code. Two vets in NJ had their licenses suspended for just this thing. It may be good to also file a complaint in Virginia with their veterinary board. You might also file consumer complaints with both states' attorneys general offices (also most are online). Too bad you can't also turn her into the IRS, because I have little doubt that she is claiming all her income.

The open fontanel generally closes shortly after birth on any animal. This is a major defect in your dog. Also, seizures are an indication of inherited epilepsy. There is no test for epilepsy, as it is generally diagnosed through the history of seizure events.

In any event, hang onto Kassidy. She needs your love and compassion. Its not her fault, and I'm afraid her mother will never see a gentle hand.

Why You Shouldn't Buy That Puppy on the Internet

A Google search of puppies for sale produces numerous puppy merchant websites (see bottom of page). But please do not buy a puppy over the internet. Many of these puppies are coming from puppy mills that sell directly to the public or that raise dogs, for the most part, for resale to pet shops (USDA licensed facilities). Reputable breeders do not sell puppies to families they haven't met in person. They do a thorough screening of potential buyers of their puppies. They provide health guarantees and provide health clearances for genetic defects inherent in the breed. It is not common to see kennel cough, coccidia, giardia, ear and eye infections, upper respiratory infections and worms in puppies that come from reputable breeders.

Save a Life

Every year, animal shelters destroy millions of dogs -- including purebreds and puppies -- and cats. PLEASE adopt a companion animal from your local shelter, humane society, rescue organization or veterinarian. In addition, many pet supply stores, such as Petsmart or Petco, sponsor adoption days. You can also find animals to adopt at www.petfinder.com, www.pet-ark.com and www.pets911.com.

CAPS Complaints

CAPS receives consumer complaints from people who have purchased puppies over the internet. Most of these puppies have mild to very serious medical problems, including hereditary defects. On May 11, 2006 CNN aired a lengthy segment entitled, Sick Puppies Dog Some Online Purchasers. In this story on internet puppy sales, CNN Consumer Correspondent Greg Hunter interviewed CAPS President Deborah Howard, who addressed the issues involved with internet puppy buying and showed video footage of puppy mills that sell to The Hunte Corporation, the largest puppy brokerage facility in the country. The story focused on Celebrity Kennels (aka Wizard of Claws) in Florida, who obtain many of their puppies from Hunte. Celebrity Kennels sells puppies both through a strip mall store front, where they show puppies to consumers who sit in a waiting room, and over the internet. Just because pet shops and online sellers have celebrity customers doesn't mean that these puppy merchants obtain puppies from reputable breeders.

Summary of a few CAPS' Internet Puppy Complaints

Pages listing litters and upcoming litters immediately arouse suspicion that this breeder has a puppy mill. There are numerous dogs and puppies at this facility. The owners deliberately cross breed their dogs to produce mixed breed puppies, also know as "designer" dogs. Another indication of a puppy mill: the owners do not allow prospective buyers on the premises, claiming that humans transmit diseases to puppies. In fact, the opposite is true. Dogs have certain worms and illnesses that can be transmitted to humans (for example, roundworms, sarcoptic mange and giardia). The following paragraph is quoted from their website:

Can we visit and see the pups? - We used to answer this with a resounding YES! However, we recently had an experience with a pup that became sick shortly after going to her new home. The pup recovered nicely, but the only way this pup could have been exposed to this virus was through casual contact with visitors, as we have NEVER dealt with this virus before. No, you don't need to worry about getting a pup from us, but we really do need to safeguard the health of our puppies, for the puppies' sake, our sake, and the buyer's sake. Unfortunately, even the most diligent, clean, well-meaning visitors can bring a disease to our kennel that can spell disaster for our puppies. Think of it this way - hospitals don't allow visitors into the nursery area. Baby and Puppy immune systems are not fully functional for months.

And yet another sign of a mill is the fact that the puppies are not raised in a home:

Are the pups raised in the house? - No. Frankly, no-one could have litters of puppies like this in a clean, healthy, environment in the house. And, we have a small grooming shop and boarding kennel, so we're at work in our kennel anyway. Mike and Lucy generally begin their day with the puppies at about 6 am, and finish up about 5 pm, with a final walk for the dogs at about 9 pm. The kids, Elizabeth (12), Charles (5), Rachel (3), and Eleanor (2) love to play with the pups. The babysitter has a scheduled time to bring the three little ones out the "shop" to play with puppies every day.

Next Day Pets (www.nextdaypets.com)
Breeders: Tim and Stacy Brock, Rocky Comfort, MO - 43A-3120 c**k-a-poo arrived with Upper Respiratory Infection, Hookworm, Coccidia, ear mites and runny eyes.

This website, like many other puppy sale sites on the internet is nothing more than a place for sellers to post their puppy litter ads and websites. We have looked up the names of a number of breeders selling on this site on the USDA breeder and dealer directories, and most of them have USDA licenses. This means they are puppy mills that supply puppies to the pet shop industry. These are the types of facilities that CAPS investigates on a regular basis.

Dear Dawn,

Not only am I sorry to hear that you are angry with the Kools, but I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your puppy. I know it doesnt matter how long you've had a dog for, you instantly become attached and its something you never truly get over. I wish you had contacted Pat when you first started having trouble, maybe the out come would have been different.

When I read all the info you wrote about the receipts I was going to go check mine, but I felt it wasn't necessary. You see I had a wonderful experience with the Kools so I had no reason to doubt her. Today I had to take Mya to the vet for a regular visit. Since I was in her folder to get an insurance form I decided to ck the receipts and everything was correct from dates to names and everything else I could think of.

Someone else also wrote that their puppy came very dirty and smelled like hay. Mya came in a clean crate and she was also clean (didnt even have to give her a bath the 1st day). She did however smell like hay, but I was told by Pat that she would smell like hay and therefore it was no surprise or a big deal.

Not that I am accusing you of anything but dont you find it odd that all of these bad reports have come out only within the last 2 & 1/2 to 3 wks when I know they have been in business since at least the year 2000. I searched all over for reviews on them prior to purchasing and found nothing. I just find it odd that its all of a sudden.

A wonderful family pet

I found the Kool Alaskan Malamute website when I was searching for a breeder. I looked into a few breeders before deciding to purchase from the Kools. I chose them based on the following:

1. How well organized the website is
2. The Kool family history that is posted on the website
3. Group shots of the puppies, individual and updated pictures of the puppies
4. The lines of both parents
5. History of the adults along with assessments of their personalities
6. Pictures of where and how the dogs live
7. And most important my conversations with Pat Kool

I purchased a puppy back in October 2007. Since I live in NY I was unable to go to Michigan to pick my puppy out myself. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Pat. I felt she was knowledgeable about all of the litters I was interested in. Pat was very helpful and friendly in helping me pick the puppy that was right for my family and budget. Pat was able to answerer any and all of the questions I had about the breed itself, the puppies, the parents, and the general health of all dogs involved.

In 1 weeks time, while waiting for my puppy to arrival I was in touch with Pat through email the entire time. I never felt ignored or that she was unreachable.

I received my puppy (Mya) on a Sunday. She seemed to be in good health, but still the very next day I took her to my own vet to be checked out. Per my vet she seemed to be in good health and I should have nothing to worry about. Before the first week ended I received a folder in the mail from the KOOLS containing proof of shots, when the next shots should be received, family history including pictures of her mom and dad, pictures of her litter and several shot of her from the time she was born till the time I received her, and general care instructions for her.

I had her for about 6 months or so when she started to have some diarrhea a couple of times a week. I waited about two weeks then I contacted Pat through email to see if she could help. I received her response within a few hours she asked me a few question and requested I stop giving her any treats or table food for a few months. I followed her instructions and had no problems after that. When she was about 1 year old I resumed with the treats and the occasional table food and she has been fine. Just a sensitive puppy stomach I guess.

I have had Mya for about 17 months now and she is a happy, healthy well mannered dog. She is extremely smart and learns everything I try to teach her within a few hours to a day or two. Never mind what she has learned all on her own. She has the sweetest personality and everyone she meets comments about it (even everyone at my vets office). I can't begin to tell you how many people stop me when I'm walking her or stop their cars to say how beautiful she is, and trust me, she is BEAUTIFUL!!!


Over the past 17 months I have been in contact with Pat Kool on a regular basis, whether it is to send her pictures or ask a question. Pat always makes me feel like she's glad to hear from me. And after completing my end of the agreement by sending in the dog food labels, proof of vet care and her spaying, I received all the papers I was suppose to. I have read the two bad reviews on here and felt compelled to respond with my own experience with the Kool family. I will absolutely purchase another puppy from her hopefully someday soon.

Hi Pat and family!

Talon and I just wanted to send a little note to say hello and let you know that we are doing very well! Talon has his yearly physical in 2 weeks with his favorite dr! Dr Albin! He reminds Talon not to be so OCD when it comes to certain things! Talon is such a charm, he lights up my life in so many ways even though he can be quite fresh and devious sometimes (like his father!!) My mom says he is her worst nightmare but she always refers to him as "Grandma's boy" My dad just loves him they are best friends.............I am in school 4 nights a week now so he and my dad spend quality time together and they go for a walk every night. Talon knows when I bring my back pack downstairs its his and grandpas time and will go get his leash and cry at my dad until they go!!! I love him!

We went on a road trip to Indiana to visit the Bass Pro Shop Saturday and took Samson to help him get used to chaos. He had the best day of his life! He charmed every person walking by and kissed so many kids we lost count. I gave him a bath that morning so he was all soft and fluffy.

No one could believe that he just turned 7 months old. I don't know how big your boys usually are at this age, but he is guite large. He's also very well behaved and listens like an adult dog (most of the time). He just keeps getting more beautiful every day and we couldn't ask for a better temperament or personality. I think about a hundred people asked where we got him - don't see many Malamutes in our area.

A wonderful place to purchase a Malamute!

I found the kool website on Puppyfind when I was shopping for a Giant Malamute for my son, who purchased a wonderful AKC giant male in November. In browsing the site, my husband saw Snow's gray male, 3/4 malamute and 1/4 samoyed, and he fell in love. Both puppies were flown to California, Maxx arriving with a rare 14 inches of snow. Our inquiries as to their progress, growth, temperament, shipping needs--were all addressed within hours at the most, often while I was still online, and the Kools worked with us every step of the way. Both puppies arrived in the California desert in excellent health. When I walk Maxx, drivers stop to ask where I acquired such a beautiful dog. I would not hesitate to purchase from the Kools based on email communications and photographs, wherever I lived.

Luna is a very sweet dog and was painted in the best light possible so Pat Kool would relinquish her AKC papers to me for proof of full ownership. Through no falt of her own, Luna seems to suffer emotional scars indicative of mass produced puppies.

Upon review of Lori and Jeff Rago's adoption application in June 2008, Kool Alaskan Malamutes turned Lori and Jeff down for not having a fenced-in yard, for having 2 cats, and for having a female Alaskan Malamute, all which are fully against Alaskan Malamute rescue groups' standards for successfully young adult and adult Malamute adoptions. After Lori Rago BEGGED Pat Kool over and over again to adopt the female Malamute being offered for free, Kool Alaskan Malamutes reluctantly agreed to let Lori bring her female Malamute named Venus over to meet our Malamute female that was for adoption. Upon seeing that all went well with the meeting of the 2 Malamutes, Kool Alaskaan Malamutes agreed to give the Ragos a chance at adoption of our Malamute that they begged us to give them. This was on 6/28/08. The Ragos promptly named their newly adopted Malamute Luna.

Luna is also doing very well with the food change. She had a loose bowel movement last night, but this morning, it was almost normal. I'm so glad I thought to mix the beef, rice and cottage cheese. By the way, house breaking is going extremely well for the first day! Right now, I'm pretty certain it's me that's more trained than her, but there have been no accidents and she already seems to know what "do you have to go outside" means. Have you taught her to wait for people to go through a door first? I have been amazed that she will wait for me to go in the house first!

2nd full day went pretty well. I worked on obedience with both Venus and Luna. We played a game too. We have a giggle ball toy that Venus used to love to play fetch with. Both dogs took turns to run after it and play with it while the other had to sit and stay. When I'd determined that time was up, I either had Venus bring it to me (well, sort of) LOL she drops it near me so it rolls to me and when Luna had it, I just told her to drop it, We also worked on sit stays and down. Luna is catching on to all of this in our household very quickly. These guys are so smart!

AND, wouldn't you know it, that as soon as we are being heavily harassed by Jolene Houghtaling of Hudson's Malamutes because we have evidence against her of crimes that she has committed that we are about to turn into the authorities, that we get 2 Rip-off Reports against Kool Alaskan Malamutes within 6 days of each other!! A coincidence??? We never even heard of the Rip-off Report until 2/22/09. And, here comes on the first Rip-off Report 14 months AFTER Dawn bought her puppy, and the second Rip-off Report comes on 8 months AFTER Lori adopts her young adult from Kool Alaskan Malamutes! Again, I say: A coincidence??? Could it be that since Jolene Houghtaling of Hudson's Malamutes receives $2000 to $2500 per puppy that she is paying Lori, who has been in desperate need of money, to write this very negative Rip-off Report????
