I used legal zoom to start a small LLC business. Recently, I was informed by email that I will be renewed for registered agent service at $159.00. I chose to cancel my subscription as I am looking to possibly either dissolve or go with another entitiy to file with the state as required.

When I click on "cancel subscription", I am taken to a page that requires me to provide documentation that I have another registered agent before moving on. I find this to be rather reprehensible that it is any of their business as to how I run my business and to whom I do business with. The payment is also set up for an automatic withdrawl from my bank account and after doing some research, I have found that many unfortunate people have been sent to collections by legal zoom after having slosed their businesses and refused to pay their extortion fees!!

This is how they hold people hostage and extort them out of money:

To appoint a new registered agent, you'll have to follow these steps: Step 1:
Obtain the proper form to change your registered agent from the Secretary of State (or other state filing office). This form is sometimes called a Statement of Change of Registered Office/Agent, Certificate of Change, or Statement of Information.

Step 2:
Complete the information that is needed on the form, and sign where instructed. Your state may also require the signature of the new registered agent that you are appointing.

Step 3:
Submit and file the form as instructed. Some states offer online filing through their business office websites, while others require filing by mail with the appropriate fee.

Step 4:
Save a copy of the filed document or a screenshot of your company's updated information on the state filing office's website.

You can also give us a call at (877) 808-8977 for more information.
Friendly reminder: We can't cancel your service until you've appointed a new registered agent.   I do not see how this can be legal to hold someone of a business hostage like this!! All I am asking for is to be immeadiately released and canceled from my subscription!!

The law

The state where your LLC is registered requires you to list a registered agent, and the registered agent is required by law to accept service of process.  If you stop paying Legalzoom but keep them listed as your registered agent, then they are basically providing the same service but not getting paid for it.

So obviously they will not be OK with that.  You need to either find another registered agent, or dissolve the LLC.  Otherwise, you are breaking the law.
