I was a member of LifeTime Fitness for several years, and even referred several friends to their gym.  When I built a home gym, I went online to LifeTimeFitness.Com and sent an online message asking them to terminate my membership effective immediately.  I received no response but assumed that my membership had been cancelled as instructed.  A few months later I noticed that I was still being billed, so I went to the gym to find out what the problem was.  

The salesperson I spoke with cancelled my membership effective Jan. 31, 2015, even though I had cancelled online in September, and even though I was sitting in his office in early December.  I followed up with a call to their corporate office (the toll-free number listed on their website was wrong) and was informed that I could only terminate my membership in person.

When I asked why they hadn't responded to my online message telling me that I had to go into the local gym to terminate, there was no response.  When I asked why I could change payment options online (new credit card) but not terminate, there was no response.  When I asked why they could have a membership person contact me within 15 minutes if I was signing up for a new membership, but no one would contact me when I tried to terminate, there was no resposne.  When I said it was the worst customer experience I had ever had, there was no response.

The moral of the story: read the fine print, or better yet, take your business to a gym that treats you like a person and not like a credit card.
