I would like to know if I am entitled to refund of Union dues. I was hired as an employee with the Sacramento Police Department as a Police Records Assistant.

The probation for the position is a year. We were not told when we were hired that the Union does not represent us when we are on probation and therefore if we are dismissed we do not have an appeal process and the Local 39 will not due anything for us.

The Union rep told me we are employees at will which means that we can be dismissed for any reason and the mangagement does not have to give us a reason. I would like to know why they take dues if they do not represent us?

The union knows that the SPD has been releasing employees from probation when the time is getting close for the probationary period to be over. one employee was recently released with just 21/2 weeks left for the probationary period to be over.

I was released and I only have a month left for my probation to be over. The Union rep and employees of SPD records stated that last year an employee in records was released the day before her probation was to be over.

I was told the Union does not give refunds. I believe they should have to tell the new employees that they are not represented by the Union until their probation is over.

This organization goes after unions that unfairly charge dues to employees of a company who are not union members

AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, February 08, 2004

A alternative union isnt your only choice.

There is an organization though I cant remember the name, which is a organization dedicated to the right of choice for all people (not just union leaders).

This organization goes after unions that unfairly charge dues to employees of a company who are not union members and sometimes actually succeed in shutting down unions.

Often however, they succeed in forcing the union to play fair, and get fined bigtime when they dont. And often the union member involved is re-instated or compesated for what done wrong to him.

Reality is that as more unions become as corrupt as many have been, they are losing more and more members.

My own father was a bigtime union leader in his own little CORNER at AA years ago (pre1975) yet now agrees with my stand that unions long ago stopped fighting for benefits and now fight for anything they can get, and often unfair to everybody else.

You know as well as I that many union members are way way overpaid for the jobs they do.

There is no way anyone can say that a broomsweeper pushing a broom should get anymore than min. wage. Yet at Rockwell (before I left there) they were getting $15-$25 per hour.
And often did all sweeping in 1 hr and sat around the other 7 waiting to sweep up any mess.

Union problems - resolution ..there are national anti-union groups that sue unions for unfair treatment of workers.

AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, February 08, 2004

When a union member feels ripped off, either form a alternative union (which can be problematic depending on location & company) or
what is more succesfull, there are national anti-union groups that sue unions for unfair treatment of workers.

This includes unions collecting dues from people who are not even union members and also forcing a new hire to be union just to work for a company.

The legal outfit is a anti-union-required outfit, but simply believes that the worker should have the right of choice.

Personally I dont ever want unions to represent me, as I would have to eliminate my free will and my own rights of what to support.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

You are not alone... terminated for trying to organize with another union

AUTHOR: The - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, February 07, 2004

I am an ex-employee with Local 39 and was terminated along with another fellow co-worker for trying to organize with another union.

Since then, I have moved on with my life and have found a better, less political company to work for.

What you have to remember that even though Local 39 is a Union and is suppose to represent the rights of workers, it still is an organization trying to make and keep money. That is the bottom line.

Local 39 is about as corrupt as corrupt can get. Local 39 does not feel that it has to follow the same line it feeds to it's membership with it's own employees. We fought back and are still fighting back. We have one NLRB win under our belt and are about to have another one this week.

Getting you signed up as a member/fee payer is all that matters to them; then the pressure is on the Local 39 clerical staff to make sure you start paying dues. Who you are and what you do is totally secondary to everything else.

Although in no way am I against Unions and what they stand for, I am against Local 39. They no longer have the standing they once had in the labor community and they are continuing to go down hill.

Best thing I can tell you is to try to get organized with another Union that knows the meaning behind true representation.
