On March 17 2012, I took my car (2002 Chevy Malibu) to Louisville Brakes and Mufflers to get a tune-up due to my engine light coming on. When I got there one of the workers popped the hood and told me to come and look once it was up on the machine. When I came back there to look he had advised me that the manufacturers spark plugs were still on the car. To get a better understanding of what he was saying, I asked him are you saying that Ive never had a tune up. Hey stated thats what I said in a nasty voice. I advised him that I had had one before and they gave it to me, however I didnt know when. He stated well these are the manufacturers spark plugs. Just disregarding what I had just told him. I really didnt feel like I had a leg to stand on, thats why I didnt continue to speak on it because for one I didnt know when I had the tune up done, and for two, I didnt know if I had a receipt since I knew it had been a while. I knew I had went to Louisville Brakes and Mufflers to get my tune up because I never let no one else work on my car. Whenever I start going somewhere, I continue to go to that same place because I know its not good to let everyone work on your car. I do know Ive been going to them for years.

I was planning on staying there until they finished, but when he said that I couldnt sit there and just think about it. I called my sister to come and get me so I could go home and try to find the receipt. Without that receipt it was their work against mine. I didnt think I would find the receipt because I know it had been a while since I had a tune up. Once I got home I looked for the receipt and I found. I called Louisville Brakes and Mufflers just to make sure, I just couldnt believe it. The man that works the front desk answered the phone and I never told him that I had found the receipt or anything, I just asked him if they were right about me still having the Manufacturers spark plugs on my car. He stated I dont know whats going on with your car I will let you speak with the mechanic. The mechanic that had told me about my spark plugs got on the phone and I asked him once again. He again stated yes, the manufacturers plugs are still on your car. I was so upset because that would mean that when I took my car in on July 15,2008 to get a tune up, they charged me $213.36 and never gave me a tune up. I waited for them to call to tell me that my car was ready and they never called, so I gave it about 2 to 3 hours and had my sister come get me and my boyfriend. When I get up there, the mechanic was at the window, I showed him the receipt from 2008 and now he changes his story. Now he says yeah, we put the same spark plugs on the last time that the manufacturer used. First of all, I took my car in to get a tune up, I had no idea when my last tune up was, so I had no reason to look for my receipt until he had initially told me that the manufacturers spark plugs are on there. Basically he put his foot in his mouth. So Im mad and yes I raised my voice because Im mad. Ive realized that Ive paid a company $213.36 and services were never rendered. Well as Im raising my voice the man that sits at the front desk comes in and he never stated who he was, all he started doing was yelling that they gave me a tune up in 2008. Now this is the same man that answered the phone and told me he didnt know what was going on with my car and that I needed to speak to the mechanic, now he know everything. The mechanic at this point was not talking anymore, it was the man that sits at the front desk talking now. I started cursing so I started cursing, my sister and boyfriend got into the argument as well. I was shocked at his behavior, yes I was mad (rightfully so), and for him to start cursing just took me aback. I asked him who he was because he never told us who he was. I never knew his position as long as Ive been taking my car to them. All Ive ever seen him do is answer the phone, when you first come in, hes the first person you see at the front desk asking you what you need, and he takes your money once they finish. So when I asked him who he was, he stated Im the one who owns this d**n place. I was even more shocked, the owner behaving this way, and on top of it all you all took money from me, so why are you mad. So I guess he was offended by me asking him who he was because he then asked me, who the hell are you, I told him I am a paying customer.

I wasnt planning on paying for the tune up since I knew for a fact that I had never had one from the last time back in 2008. I went ahead and paid for it because they were not going to give me my keys until I did. Once I got home I called around to different car shops just to see how often I would need a tune up. I have platinum plugs and I know that I dont need a tune up very often. Every place I called told me the same thing with platinum plugs a tune up is only needed every 100 thousand miles, with that being said, if Louisville Brakes and Mufflers had given me a tune up on July 15,2008, I would not have needed another one on March 17,2012, it has not even been 4 years yet. That lets me know that they never gave me a tune up in 2008 and they charged me $213.36.

My other issue with them is on August 21,2009 my car would not start, I had my car towed to Louisville Brakes and Mufflers and they called me and advised me that my anti theft system shut down and they would have to change my ignition. The cost that day was $462.13. Well I never knew nothing about the anti theft system, by I told them they can go ahead and do it if thats the problem. As time went by my car would not start, and I would have a tow truck take it to Louisville Brakes and Mufflers, never thinking it was the same issue with them changing out my ignition. In my mind that issue was fixed. So as time went by, I kept taking my car to them and they would tell me what was wrong with it and charge me, it was always something new. One morning my car wouldnt start and the tow man looked it over and said it was my anti theft system. It needs to be reset. So he sit there and showed us how to reset it and it takes about 12 minutes for the reset. Well that day I didnt have to take my car to them. As time went on my car kept stopping now at this point we know how to reset the system, however, Ive paid Louisville brakes and Mufflers to fix that problem. So my boyfriend kept taking my car back to them because we know now why my car wont start from time to time. When we first started taking it back to them he tried to say maybe I used my old ignition key and thats making it not start. Ive never used that key again since the ignition was changed, I have no reason to. I know that it wont work. I put that key up just in case my keyless entry stops working and that is the key I will have to use to unlock my door if needed. To this day my old key is put up, I know where its at but I dont need it. Eventually they told me to take it to the dealer to have them clear out the anti theft system and reset it all over. I took my car to the dealer and they was going to charge me $90 to clear out the system and reset it. When my boyfriend got there with the car, they advised him that Louisville Brakes and Mufflers had cleared out the codes and they could not read the codes no longer. So I couldnt get that done. Actually I feel like if they had told me that at first instead of changing my ignition and charging me $462.13, I would not to this day still have this problem. Well one day my boyfriend had took my car to Louisville Brakes and Mufflers just to get an oil change, when they called they were charging me way more than normal. My boyfriend asked what were they charging me for, the stated the car stopped while it was there and they had to restart it. Well at this point they didnt know that we knew how to reset the system and it only takes 12 minutes to restart. After my boyfriend told him that, he took $100 off my bill. They were actually going to charge me $100 for a problem that they were supposed to have fixed and charged me $462.13 in 2009. To this day I would say about 2 to 3 times out of a week my car still stops, and we have to reset it. I feel like Louisville Brakes and Mufflers owe me $213.36, for the tune up they charged me for on July 15,2008 because they never gave me one, I also feel like they owe me $462.13 for changing out my ignition on August 21,2009 because to this day the problem still exists.

I want the public to be aware of this. I still cant believe it. I know Im not the only one theyve done this to. I contacted Better Business Bureau and they never responded to them. After I made a complaint on line with BBB I called and spoke to a rep to see what the status was after waiting for a couple of days. He stated he sent them the complaint and usually when Louisville Brakes and Mufflers get a complaint from them, they respond right back. Well its been every since March 17,2012 since my complaint with BBB was filed and they have not yet responded. I really feel like they owe me for all the times I was bringing my car to them for the same reason (anti theft system) and didnt know it at the time, and they were charging me, I just cant find the receipts.

  For future reference :

Throughout this report you have used the term "tune up" as though it means something.   Before cars became controlled by computers, a tune-up was a specific set of adjustments and parts replacements that needed to be done on a regular basis.   All of those adjustments are now done automatically by computers and most parts that used to be replaced no longer exist.

If you walk into a shop and request a "tune up".  You're just telling them that you're there to spend some money and have no idea what you're asking for.

" I took my car (2002 Chevy Malibu) to Louisville Brakes and Mufflers to get a tune-up due to my engine light coming on. "

The proper response to the engine light is to scan the computer to find out which system activated the light.  You then repair that system.    The nebulous "tune up" doesn't repair systems that aren't working.
