MagicJack LP advertises on TV almost every day that you can try their product FREE for 30 days. This is untrue. I called the phone number from the TV infomercial and gave them my information. I was advised that I would be charged 30 days after I started using it. Instead, they got credit authorization immediately and this caused a check to bounce. I had to pay the returned item fee from my credit union ($30), the bounced check charge from the bank it was returned to ($25) and a $4 fee to send the money, (via the internet). In all, I have spent an extra $59 for a FREE item that was not supposed to be charged for 30 days.

The only way you can contact anyone from the company is to use LIVE CHAT, which is about as helpful as eBay's (totally useless). I asked for a customer service phone number, which they would not provide. After detailing what happened, they told me to return the Magic Jack and they would refund my money. I did not want to return the item, I just wanted them to pay for their FALSE advertising. When I asked for the company headquarters name and address, I got the reply "Talahassee, FL". They are not even in that city. I got their address and phone number on the web and when I called, I just got an answering machine.

I hope MANY other people write about their experience here. Perhaps if enough do, some attorney will do a class action lawsuit to STOP their FALSE advertising.
The sad thing here is that the Magic Jack works surprisingly well. I'm not sure I'll "cut off my nose to spite my face" by returning it. All I will get back is the $90 plus dollars they charged me for 2 Magic Jacks. I will probably never see the $59 it cost me for the 30 FREE days use.

Just an observation.

I see the infomercial for this product on TV a lot. One odd thing I noticed was the graphic that they always keep at the top left corner of the screen. It says with the MJ you make all your calls for FREE! Then right below, it says that it costs $19.95 per year. I'm no mathemetician, but isn't $19.95 a lot more than "free"? Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining.

MJ might or might not be a good product. From the complaints I've heard, their product support is very close to non-existent. Nothing but a live-chat feature that rarely has anyone on the other end. Also, companies that choose not to include any contact information (phone number or physical address) on their website make me suspicious. Why? Because most legit companies have no problem doing this.

MAGICJACK, TO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

AUTHOR: Shanemac - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 12, 2009

I have searched the web to find out if this company is all it is cracked up to be.
I noticed my local retailer now carries this item and am very hesitant to try it. I tried the skype deal and was 100% disapointed. Disconnected after first day. Horrible sound. So I did a little search on MagicJack to see what I could find.
The first thing that I found was that Magicjack had an "F" rating with the "BBB" . Yet I just checked the "BBB" website and found that they now have an "A-" rating.
Could this be to the fact that "this" "magicjack" account with the "BBB" was only opened March 17th 2009. Where did the past couple years of complaints go?
My biggest concern is this billing issue. Most of the complaints that I have read have been concerns over being charged before the 30 days was up. Wake up people! Nothing in life is free!!! I beleive you should be charged up front! To many people are finding ways to cheat companies. What happens if you dont send the equipment back after 30 days? Should they charge the "debit card" you just had canceled? What about all the people stating that they "CRACKED" the system! I have read numerous postings of people that were able to bypass the usb box completely and run software to duplicate and resell the phone service. It is people like this who ruin it for the "HONEST PEOPLE". If the hackers are sucessful, I dont see this company staying afloat. The service will get so bad, nobody will want it anymore.
This is to the people who buy things with other peoples money. If you do not have the money in your bank account to cover the cost of a purchase, dont buy it! If you bounce your account, blame yourself! Dont go online crying about it. A debit card is a debit card NOT A CREDIT CARD. Just because a retailer lets you sign for it, only means it takes a couple extra days to reach your bank. Charging an actual credit card is diffrent. A hold is just placed on your "available" "CREDIT LIMIT". When you try to make a credit card purchase with a debit card the money comes out of your checking account not a credit card company. Just because their "logo" is on your bank card only means that they are the ones who transfer the money.
The second part of the billing issue is that the company is still "BILLING" after you cancel the service. Some people even report that "new" bank cards are even being charged after the old card is canceled. This is due to the fact that they have placed a continuous yearly charge to the account tied to your card. From what I have read, to cancel billing, you have to write the company and cancel your service or close your bank account.
I have just read about 50 "BBB" reports and for the most part, they are negative reports. I think Im gonna hold out a little longer before running out and buying. The one main thing is my local "major retailer" sells this item for $40 cash with first year of service included. So no credit card needed. Another option would be a prepaid credit card. People be sure to do your homework before buying. One more thing to point out is that your computer needs to be free of spyware and have up to date software. The best way to rule out a computer problem is to install a fresh copy of your operating system and drivers. Several people have reported use an extra lower grade computer only for their phone service. Something to think about for sure. If the company holds up, this could be HUGH savings in the long run!!!!!!!!!

I come to this site to make sure I am not getting ripped off, but the reports I got about this product were to say the least,,a bit extreme.
A bit of info about me I am a top level network engineer for a worldwide logistics company.

A couple of things people should think about and would most certainly save a lot of heartache.

Technolgy complaints:
1: This product did require some extra time to set up running on vista x32.
2. PC does have to be on!!! important, no sleep mode, no hibernation.
3. User interface comes up when calls are recieved " any VOIP" soft phone will do this.

Billing complaints:

1. Understand the way credit card holds go against debit cards in America.
If you rent a hotel or rent a car against your debit card they will take the money from your card as soon as you make the reservation or but the product. This is not an attempt to steal your money, but this gaurantees to the company you have the resources to pay for what you have ordered. They are not going to say oh I trust "Bob" because he says he will pay.

Service complaints:
1. You get what you pay for. 19.95 a year for phone service, most of the people comlaining have a computer, most likely a cell phone, and internet.

Customer Service:
1. Go to service complaints. If you want 24x7 online live people they cost money!
Well then that would cost the magic jack to be more expensive. So you have to ask if you want customer service then go with a traditional provider that has that set up and you will pay in your monthly bill for all of theose live people to be sitting there awaiting your call.

All in all I use my cell phone for 99.0% of my calls but I like having a home phone and this product does work and it is alot cheaper then my current cable phone and my last regular phone. I can't bag on this product, it works and quality is good and my phone company is getting the boot. saving me $50.00 a month.
was it worth it ???? Yep!
