This man, knowing I was injured and couldn't drive, demanded I pay the rent and deposit on what he described as a three-bedroom condo with an HOA and a community pool without allowing me to make arrangements to view the property.

He said other people were interested and I would need to meet his maintenance man to exchange the money for a key because he was out of town through the weekend. He initially wanted me to deposit money into his bank account but I would not do so.

Upon meeting the maintenance man I was told that he did not have a key but that he would meet me there on Sunday and give me a key. On Sunday the landlord called me and said that he had two employees at the property that could help me unload my stuff seeing as I was injured. I rushed over with my two children and was told that I would need to pay them to help me and I politely decline as I did not have any money to pay them.

The next day, the more questionable of the two men showed up at the house asking my teenage daughter for the money that we owed him. She came and got me and I told the gentleman that I did not owe him anything and he said that he helped my children move some boxes in and a mattress which meant that I did.

Still not having any money I told he'd have to come back later. He asked me if I could go and get the money and I told him no because I could not walk and had returned the Uhaul and had no other car but that I would get him some money the next time I was at the store.

The next day the other maintenance man came to my place to finish some things and when I told him about the other gentleman showing up asking for money he informed me that they did not know that gentleman and that he had been hired off of Craigslist in a gig job scenario. He said that I should call the police if he showed up again.

Later that day while the maintenance man was still in my place my son spotted the questionable gentleman sitting on the side of the condo all alone in the shadows seeming to be waiting or who knows what but he did not live there and did not belong there. I went to the maintenance man inside my place and told him the fellow was outside and ran to go and handle it.

  He returned half an hour or so later telling me again to call the police if he returned. He said that I didn't need to worry because he told the gentleman that I would be calling the police on him if he showed up again etc. I felt like he put me on the spo in saying that because I asked him to come back and if he wasn't out to get me before, he likely was after.

I was terrified and alone with two children unable to walk or offer much in the way of protection. The condo had a broken out, boarded up window and the front door would not catch when shut. I was never given the key to the condo so I could not leave and lock the place behind me either. The gentleman had been in my home before I was even there and he knew enough to know that I was an easy target and that I had a 15 year old daughter.

I left that same night and sent an email to the landlord requesting my money back and informing him that I would not be staying. He never responded. I removed my items from there the next week and continued to ask for my money back with no response. Months later I tried to get another apartment and was denied because there was an eviction on my record that this landlord filed against me before the next rent was even due.

He has a judgement now for two months rent when I paid that plus some up front and only stayed 3 days. I was never served eviction papers and my deposit never returned. No walk through was ever conducted and I never received a key. He is a slumlord whom I've learned owns a handful of properties wherein he evicts his tenants every 3 to 6 months. This man is a retired educator and upon all appearances seems to be a decent person but is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

I hope I see the day he regrets messing with this single mom. He cheated me, scammed me, lied to me, scared me and smeared my name. He caused turmoil to my children and has created a barrier between future opportunities for my children and done so in the name of his daughters trust.
