I moved into Harbor Beach apartments in Orlando in June of 2010.  My exterior door frame was cracked and although maintenance requests were submitted, it was never fixed although the office claimed it was.  All it took was a hard push for the door to pop open when it was locked.  Within 2 months of moving into the apartment, I was robbed.  I filed a police report and decided that I no longer felt safe and wanted to break the lease and move.  I spoke to the office who told me that I could break the lease if I found a sublessor.  I continued to work with the office after I advised them in writing that I planned to move with a 60 days notice.   I was a couple of weeks late on one month's rent before the 60 days was up.  I had spoken to the office and advised I would pay them the rent when I turned over the key within 2 weeks.

I was in the process of packing and moving some items and staying at times at my sister's place in the metro area.  My sister and I had gone to the apartment 5 days before I had planned to move the remaining items.  When I returned 5 days later, the lock was changed and all of my personal items were gone.  The office manager did not post a 3 day notice nor was any eviction notice filed; they simply threw out everything there.  When confronted, the manager (who I had  been working with all along) said I had abandoned my apartment and since she felt my belongings weren't worth over $200, she didn't need to take any legal action!  I had much more than $200 worth of personal belongings valuing over $1000.  They want me to pay them $2000.  It must be illegal to change the locks and throw personal items out without notice in Florida!
