After a slip and fall accident I went to the hospital but a bit later needed to be examined and referred to a specialist for my injury, as suggested by the emergency room doctor.

I have no health insurance. I went to Med Express on a Friday evening. At Med Express I was required to pay $115 up front for the exam/referral. I was not happy with the fee but, needing a referral to see a doctor to tell me exactly the extent of my injury so I paid.

My vitals were taken by a nurse but the doctor did not want to see the area of injury (shoulder), saying I should be seen by a specialist. I was in pain but would have complied to an exam by a doctor. I pressed the doctor with every possible question in regard to the injury in order to feel I was learning all I could for future reference. THAT is the only thing I got for my $115.

The doctor said they,Med Express, would call a "good" orthopedist in my area and they would call me about an appointment. I have never been in this "referral" situation before so I am new to how these things happen. I left Med Express with the understanding that I would get a call Monday.

My Tuesday at 1 I realized I had heard nothing so I called Med Express,who retrieved my file and read the report, saying it stated there that I (me, the patient) told them I was going to call around for an orthopedist myself in a town unmentioned in my visit. In other words,my $115 got me virtually nothing and I am still in pain and need a referral.

I demanded a refund from Med Express, saying they hadn't even examined my injury and that no referral was made. The Med Express manager simply reread my file again,as if that would appease me. I told them I demanded a full refund in my hand in 3 days. They tried to revert me to "corporate" but I refused saying I held THEM responsible.

This last part happened today, Tuesday February 10, 2009. Even if they do refund my money I would NOT recommend using this shady business to anyone.
