My husband, who was self-employed, heard about Mega Life insurance and purchased a policy for himself and his sons. Last year he was diagnosed with lung cancer, and one year and approximately $150,000 in out-of-pocket expense later he died from his cancer. We had contacted an attorney to sue this company and were nearing the deposition phase when my husband passed away before he could give his deposition. This company did everything they could to "wait him out," and they were successful. Now I am left without a case and with a huge hole in my bank account.

Mega's parent company, Healthmarkets, is offering me a petty settlement but with so many strings attached that it's virtually impossible for me to accept. My goal now is to warn others to avoid this company at all costs. While they advertise their product as health insurance, it is, in reality, nothing more than a discount medical plan. I am appalled that these practices are allowed in this country. In good faith we joined a plan that is strongly endorsed by what we thought was a renowned non-profit association dedicated to helping the self-employed. We all know now about the close ties between the insurance company and the association. Do not be fooled into any type of dealings with either of these organizations. One illness can wipe out a family's entire bank account.

Ignorance from Iowa

AUTHOR: Lee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, September 06, 2008

Oh, John...how ignorant we can be. Are you that misinformed? What am I going to do next year?

Guess what? I will be selling policies for Mega that meet the requirements you pretend to be so knowledgeable about.

That's right, Mega has had plans APPROVED in Massachusetts that meet those requirements. Unlimited coverage, RX, Mental health, the works. Suprising that they went through all of that if you think they will be pulling out of the state. Because they are NOT pulling from the state. So while you are counting ears of corn, I will still be working with self-employed people selling them insurance.

Now, let me educate you on what the state actually requires because as usual, you left something out.

You are correct about:

$2,000 cap on individuals and $4,000 cap on families for deductibles
$5,000 cap on individuals and $10,000 for families for out of pocket
No cap on total benefits for any particular sickness for a single year
No cap on payment towards any day in the hospital
Doctor visits and preventative before deductible

But what you left out was the HSA Plan. If you actually read page 2 of what you are talking about, it says "Or offer an HSA Plan."

Before you make comments about regulations in a state a couple thousand miles from you to an agent that is actually in that state, try to educate yourself better.

#14 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Lee, what are you going to do for work next year?

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 18, 2008

Lee, I'm wondering what you're going to do for work next year when Mega is forced to pull out of MA after the next regulations regarding compliant health plans takes effect.

Go to the MA connector website or mahealthconnector.org

At the top, click the link regarding required benefits for 2009:

$2,000 cap on individuals and $4,000 cap on families for deductibles
$5,000 cap on individuals and $10,000 for families for out of pocket
No cap on total benefits for any particular sickness for a single year
No cap on payment towards any day in the hospital
Doctor visits and preventative before deductible

Now Lee....hop on your software now and price up a Mega plan with a $4,000 deductible for families and tell me what you get.

Time to polish up that resume...huh

And by the way - MA is already geared up for companies like Mega that likely don't plan on complying - notice this sentence:

"Be careful. Some insurance companies may still try to sell you a plan that does not comply. Massachusetts-licensed insurance companies are required to put a notice on their plans. Check your plan to see if it meets the 2009 standards."

Oh....and you think your Mega office is going to tell you that starting in 2009 they won't be selling or do you think they'll try to get the entire MA field force to submit every last app possible until Jan 1st? Yeah....I'm sure UGA is going to tell their entire field force they're pulling out....right.

Get prepared to be fed the biggest line in your life about how Mega will comply. Then be prepared to get a memo on Dec 30th.

MEGA IS A WONDERFUL COMPANY, Even the cheap policies can work GREAT in Network, and pretty good out!

AUTHOR: Denver - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, August 14, 2008

I AM A MEGA REPRESENTATIVE! When you purchase HEALTH insurance the DECISION you make today with regards to your purchase could LITERALLY be a life or death decision down the road. If you buy a plan from anyone anywhere that don't cover a procedure of any kind then you may be facing not getting needed medical care in the future if your not able to foot the bill yourself. READ ON. When you get sick and you become uninsurable and start needing your insurance plan, it's to late then to start asking questions because when you're SICK/UNINSURABLE another Insurance carrier won't touch you with a ten foot pole! You will be stuck with what you bought while you were healthy, like it or not. THIS IS WORTH reading, take the time.

With that being said, here's my advice to ANYONE THAT is searching for insurance. Be aware of the definition of insurance, "Covers unforeseen risk". Next, ask yourself this before you meet with ANY insurance agent/company: What risk do you want covered vs. what risk do you need covered. Next what risk can you afford to cover vs. how risky it might be to not have certain risk covered. CONFUSED? READ ON.

NOW, consider this. There are several ways to purchase insurance today. 1. Over the internet, 2. Over the phone, 3. From a Broker that represents several companies, 4. From a CAPTIVE agent that represents one company, 5. From a captive agent that represents/sales for more than one company under the supervision of one parent company. These are the only ways that come to mind, at least in the states of AR, TN, TX, OK, MO, LA that I know of. Again, I've only held and insurance License for 6 years, thus I stated that I know of. READ ON.

SOMETHING else for Individuals seeking insurance, and professionals offering insurance to ALWAYS focus on: Health Insurance is just what it sounds like, INSURANCE FOR YOUR HEALTH. It's much different than automobile insurance in that auto insurance may cover your RIGHT or LEFT fender if a car crosses the line and dents you, thus auto insurance LITERALLY COVERS your auto (double check your auto policy) wanna make sure coverage is not limited to only covering A ficus tree (haha) READ ON.

HEALTH insurance on the other hand may LITERALLY AFFECT your health because the concept of HEALTH INSURANCE is to MAINTAIN your health which in many cases WILL LITERALLY SUSTAIN YOUR LIFE, or from an agents perspective your CLIENTS LIFE.

There is no such thing in my opinion as a bad product with ANY company, AS LONG AS THE CONSUMER understands what they have purchased and they actually get what they paid for. READ ON.

It's been questioned on this website do Mega Consumers get what they pay for, the answer is yes. READ ON.

Each plan varies state to state because of State Mandates etc....But I can tell you that for the most part today mostly what is sold in the states that I am licensed in, mostly Catastrophic plans (AWESOME COVERAGE) is what is sold. In many instances Scheduled Hospital/Surgical expense plans are an alternative option to meet budget requirements of a client. The lower price point plans are much more limited vs. Catastrophic (however) while those plans are NOT PPO plans they do utilize a network, (meaning if you the customer/agents customer) stays aware of network hospitals etc....everyone will benefit from the network discounts that will work in tandem with the coverage. The best part of those lower price point plans, is that if you happen to be on vacation, or working in a non-network area, there are NO out of network penalties. Those plans work well if a client takes advantage of NETWORK providers for the big stuff, and in most cases have more coverage if you're out of network than OTHER companies Major Medical Plans because they pay exactly how the schedule states in the SALES brochure the agents leave, and in the certificate of coverage issued by the company. The company even takes it a step further for scheduled plans and calls EVERY customer at least in states I am licensed and goes over the coverage options selected to confirm the customer understands what the agent sold them. READ ON.

SHOULD YOU MEET WITH A MEGA REPRESENTATIVE?
Why not...........There is as much good stuff on this website left by customers and agents as there is bad. Most of the bad I have read on here is from former agents that quit because they were recruited by another company, BUT some from real customers. Bottom line, I've worked for the company 6 years, I know how my competition works and I know how Mega works. My world revolves around my family and I HAVE them Insured WITH Mega. If I am passionate enough about what I have my own personal family insured and protected with, you should at least see what they have to offer to your family. Make the agent show you in writing the answers to your questions, with Mega and the competition of Mega.

Here's a link to some other reasons you should at least meet with a Mega Agent

www.megacustomers.info

See those customer testimonials.

All insurance companies have limitations and exclusions and if you'll read the fine print most of them look like a photo copy from one to the next. What really set's Mega apart from the competition is listed in the front of their health brochures called the Mega Difference, if you'll take a minute and read that, it REALLY is different in a good way vs. what may be available to you in the state you reside with another carrier.

Something I wanted to point out that I have read on here that's not true. Mega reps work for a company called UGA, in most states; they are not just limited to offering MEGA only. In some instances that may not be a plan that will work for every client. In the states I am licensed in, we can also offer coverage with United American, and in Arkansas if a customer has several illnesses or one catastrophic illness I always first offer a plan administered by Blue Cross through the state risk pool commonly referred to as CHIPS, Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool, which is a pricey yet in some cases the best alternative for the client.

Most all of the agents that represent Mega in the market today that have been around that I personally know have the Mega coverage for their own families. If they feel it's the best for them, and they are willing to drive to your house to show you what they believe in, it's worth looking at it. If something's unclear, ask to see it in writing.

I think for the most part, people try to do right by other people. Look at your options, and when it comes to HEALTH INSURANCE, get what your wanting/needing covered in writing because that is what will dictate the ways a claim is paid. REMEMBER: This is a much more important decision than insuring your home or vehicle, YOUR ACTUALLY INSURING YOU! Get it in writing from whoever you buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best of luck, hopefully MOST of you reading this post looking to purchase Health Insurance will never need it. WHAT IF???????

AGAIN, Mega is worth looking into. Another thing you might do is to also contact your local Dept of Insurance and ask them how many complaints each company you're shopping has had. Fewer complaints may mean fewer problems with claims being paid. Hope this helps anyone reading from either perspective GOOD OR BAD.

Inaccurate

You are wrong once again.

As stated in numerous areas of this site, Mega did settle, but it is just that, they "settled".

What is a settlement? It is simply a less expensive way of just taking a deep breath and letting things go so you don't have to go through a major ordeal. Everyone knows that.

Many companies "settle". Go to google (because you are very proficient with it) and type in any health insurance company and the word "settle" after it. Let me know what you find.

Defend company at all costs. Keep head in the sand. Spin all criticism and facts.

You can't make the settlement and fine Mega had to pay go away. It confirms what people thought was happening all the time. It is public record, and very damaging press.

The fine is not large. The disclosures are priceless. They confirm the main complaints about your company, and why there so many.

Maybe someone can post the settlement details here, for readers reference. The settlement can be found on various sites about Mega misdeeds.

You might try to re-write the settlement, rather than trying to spin it in your favor this time.

Former Agents Can't Hack it

AUTHOR: Lee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 07, 2007

You can't listen to a thing a former employee with any company can say. Funny how you did not say anything while you were at the company. Oh I am sure you or another former agent will counter with "Once I saw how the plans worked, I left...blah blah blah."

The fact is the job is 100% commission. You were not able to handle the job and now you blame the company. You should blame yourself instead.

You do not know what plan this woman had...AT ALL. You don't even know what state she is in. Plans differ from state to state and they vary depending on what someone wants to pay. If someone purchases a plan at a cheap price...then guess what? They get little coverage. But not everyone can afford allot so they buy the protection they need.

I know this woman's story because I have heard it before. There is/was a plan called Health Choice, which should be sold as minimal coverage. It had choices for room and board up to a max. It had choices for surgeon limits and pays 80% up to those limits. It is not a very good plan. But it is better than nothing.

HOWEVER, every state that had that plan also has a Signature plan, which has a deductible and then 100% coverage in her case. And it is a cumulative deductible for the year. Guess what? It costs a little more. There is even a rider that would have given her a cash benefit to pay for the deductible. When we offered both plans in my state, I would go over both. Guess how many people picked the cheaper less coverage plan? LOTS. This is after I explained the risks to them. Finally, I stopped giving them a choice and now sell them a Signature plan.

The company is like any other company. They will pay what the policy says. They have to. So just like if you don't have a plan, the company won't pay for your claims, if you pick a plan that has little coverage because you wants to save a few bucks more, then what? They should pay for those claims too? Of course not.

Whoever made the "Carbon Copy" comment needs to get their facts straight. Show me an insurance company that exists anywhere on this planet that pays everything. Show me a company that does not deny claims. In fact, why not search this site for Blue Cross, United Healthcare, etc? Your same type of ignorant comments are there also.

And you say you bought a policy from a MORTGAGE BROKER?????? You've got to be kidding, right? Plus your "mortgage broker" has a link to Disney World. You don't know the first thing about the people that work at Mega. There are idiots at every company, and some that are greedy. If you buy insurance from any company you should get an experienced agent. I would have sold the Signature plan to that family.

I have worked for the company for years, and I know how they work. I have no issues with them. I have HUNDREDS of emails from customers that are happy with the plans I sell them. And guess what? I sleep great at night.

Too bad Carla

That "free" doctor visit or the Preventive Plus Rider isn't free. They teach you to just tell customers that. that 500$ annual account for doctors visits hmmm 36.00 a month on your premium or $432.00 a year. If you cancel you forfeit what has been saved away for your doctors visits as well. New agents rarely get to see the details to the policy including its limits and only have info out of the pitch book that the customers get. Any questions asked about policy details usually get 3-4 different answers in the office and vague answers at that which usually end in don't worry about all of that just set the appointments and get the check and you will be fine. You have no right to assume that this womans pain is due to incompetence rather than deciept. I would have said the same thing before I opened my eyes and questioned the company rather than being scared to lose the so called "sales and financial oppurtunity of a life time".

I to was a victim of this company

AUTHOR: Larue - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 28, 2007

Joelle, My heart breaks for you as you got hooked into this sham of a company and had to go through what you went through.

To Carla, You are a carbon copy of every other agent that posts on this board. You blame the consumer for for not seeing through your lies and fake promises. This is nothing more than a discount plan with very expensive premiums. The damage your lies do to families is incomprehensible. All for a commision check. I had this policy for three months and was fortunate to get out and get real insurance before any major catastophe occurred.

All Mega employees are disgusting pieces of trash who are taught to lie, cheat and steal for the company. I went to a mortgage broker who deals with multiple companies. When I tried to show him my policy, he said it wasn't even worth reviewing. He told me that even if I didn't buy from him, to get away from Mega. I found true insurance for a lower premium. You sell only for Mega and don't offer anything else. NASE is not an independent group looking out for the self employed but the marketing division for Mega. How you scumbags sleep at night, I don't know. You destroy lives and then come on here making the victim sound as if yhey chinced out and should feel guilty about what they put their family through. You will get yours someday. Karma is going to bite your butt

Joelle

To Joelle,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My previous reply was for Carla. It was uncalled for and I apologize. Not that it makes any difference for the lost you have suffered. Carla I am sorry for what I wrote, and Joelle; once again I am very sorry for your loss and suffering.

I also have to add that I am not sure what your policy covered. I can tell you that I make sure that all of my clients purchase a CareOne Plus with most of the riders. It is too expensive for most families but it should have covered what you had to experience.

It saddens my heart and soul to hear what you have been through. I wished I could offer more comfort than a prayer for your family. Nobody wants to hear that they are going to or have lost a loved one. And as an Agent nobody wants to hear that they have let their clients down. I will promise that I will not offer a plan that does not offer the best protection for themselves or their family.

Once again I am so very sorry for your loss.

it is your fault

AUTHOR: Benjamin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 18, 2007

I beg to differ Carla.

I do not know what policy they owned and neither do you. Mega agent. The policies I sell say that it is a deductable and a max co insurance and that is all you have to pay. There are some limits but not the money this family has to pay. It sickens me that you can defend a company that will not take care of its clients.

Most sales agents are told to tell thier clients that it is a deductable and a max of $4000 co insurance max! I believe this family was lied to and you probally sold them the policy. You probally never mentioned the limitations in the policy. I have read your other comments in this forum and it disturbs me completely.

Mega is a Great Company, you just can't take riders off to get the price down!

AUTHOR: Carla - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 18, 2007

I am so sorry to hear about your loss! My heart goes out to you and your family. My only concern is that you are tearing down a company who gave you the exact policy you signed up for. Again, you can't take of riders just to save some money...it doesn't matter what company you go with! We have had this policy for 5 1/2 years and have never one time had a problem! All of our claims are paid in a timely manner and I know exactly what I will have to pay if I go to the ER, Dr. etc. What other company offers a policy where you can take your kids to the Dr. and not even pay a copay or meet some extremely high deductible before any coverage kicks in. There is only one...Mega. I feel that you and your agent were not on the same page when it came to what you wanted and what was important to you! You must get a loaded policy (with any company) and not worry about how much it will cost each month, because you are correct, it could break the bank!
