I Recieved a letter from Merchant's Credit Guide Services on 8/29/05 Stating that I owed them 103.28 on a credit account with Montgomery Wards. I had closed said account 18 years ago in good standing. The letter stated that a company by the name Capital Asset Holdings Co had Purchased the default account and that Merchants Credit Guide co was working to collect debt. I called the number on the letter and began talking with a woman who I asked about this letter. She asked me my name and then gave me my address and asked if it was correct. It was, she then said for security she needed me to verify the last four digits of my ss#. She then gave me my last four numbers and they were correct. I told her I would not acknowledge that, I just wanted to know why this letter brings up an issue with an account that was closed in good standing 18 years ago. She said that if I had a dispute with the letter That I had to send it in writing to the address on the Letter. I said I have a dispute that's why i'm calling she hung up on me.

MAKE THEM PROVE YOU OWE THIS...

They can't, number one. Not only that, it is WAY beyond the Statute of Limitations and if they report this on your credit, you can sue for damages.

JDBs prey on people's ignorance and fear..glad you have neither..and keep your money in your pocket.

Montgomery Wards went bankrupt

AUTHOR: Kara - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, September 01, 2005

I am an ex-employee of Montgomery Wards and worked for them before they filed bankruptcy. I am assuming that when you closed your account that there were some interest fees and/or late fees applied that you were unaware about, interest used to be around 21% APR. This used to happen all the time before they went bankrupt and people would call us and ask why they still owed $. You would normally be sent a final statement but when Montgomery Ward went bankrupt they sold all of their open & closed accounts to different companies to help cut down their debts so this can't be a scam. This account is so old you probably never even received a final statement, and it may have never showed up on your credit report. Is this the first time you have heard from someone since you closed the account? I can't believe nobody had contacted you for 18 years that's quite amazing. They probably wanted to let interest accumulate since the balance was so low. But if that were the case your $100 account would be well over $500 with interest. Who knows maybe nobody has been able to locate you for 18 years or the account was sitting in someone's filing cabinet. Have you moved a lot since then? Let me know, this interests me. -Kara
