I bought a TIVO from Mers/Goodwill for my son's birthday.
When he opened it about 2 weeks after I bought it he noticed that there was no remote control or power cord.

They refused to take it back because the item was on another receipt which they took from me for another return the previous day. They also said they don't take returns after 1 week. That seems real fishy to me when all other retailers don't put such a stringent requirement for returns.

On the box it said it contained a remote control and it didn't.

They really screwed me.

I used to work at a Goodwill store in Independence, MO until I had to quit due to medical reasons. I still remember the policies of the company. It is a rule at Goodwill that they can't accept returns after 7 days. That is because most of the items they get are DONATED items that other people don't want. They take items that are in good, clean, condition and they work (not broken). If an item gets broken and some one tries to return it, they can't re-sell that item or get another one like it. So that is why the return policy is what it is. Now the TiVo you bought, to them was in clean, working condition, even if it didn't have a remote or cords with it. You say it is in a box. Did you even look at the item before you bought it or did you just assume that everything was there. Had you asked, they would've let you see the item before you bought it, even if the box was sealed. It seems to me that you are mad because you didn't think about looking at the item before you bought it and didn't bother to ask what the return policy was.

I shop at GoodWills all over our bi state area. The return policy is always clearly posted above the register area. It states clearly 7 day returns.

Also, knowing it is a resale shop, and that most of the items are used, I have enough common sense to check out an item before I buy, i.e. to open a box and make sure no parts are missing.

I have made returns too, and if you still need your receipt, they will make you a copy, which is just as good as the original, so you must not of been to worried about it when they took your receipt, or you would of asked for it back, and they would of given you a copy.

Just think, you walk in with an item and no receipt and expect a refund, how do they know you even paid for it in the first place? People are crooked and companies need to look out for them selves.

I personally am glad they offer refunds at all, as a majority of resale shops/thrift stores dont even go that far.
