My name is James Wallace Mathis alias Brother James Muwakkil. I am the president of the Fort Myers Coalition for Injustice, Inc. We are part of the Lee County NAACP Unit 5110, Inc. Our office is located at 2275 Highland Avenue, Fort Myers, FL 33916-4623.  Our phone number is 239-464-1394 and 239-332-8159.  We are writing this report to complaint against the Lee County Sheriffs Dept. under Sheriff Michael Joseph Scotts supervision for failure in upholding the Law and Serving all the People in our County Equally.

Before, any one asks, who am I to talk about the Law, I will glady confess that I have a long history of criminal charges including murder on my personal record. I understand that this is a very bad stain on my personal lifes history for which I am not too happy about, but for which I served my time in prison, and paid a serious heavy price during my sentence.  I personally know what it is to be wrongfully accused of things that I have not done simply because I have a tainted past, so I fully understand that many other people are judged by their past, and not allowed to move on after their past failures. This is being reflected even as we speak by the way our Lee County Sheriffs deputies treat our people.
 
It is for that very reason that I state, that for several years now, we the African Americans that live in the Lee County area have been experiencing racial profiling and harassment by the Sheriffs Deputies. Along with our Creole, Hispanic, and Latino brothers and sisters, we are pulled over by the deputies of the Sheriffs Department. They prey on people with our skin color, ethnicity, political affiliation, a racial image of a generalized background, and because some of us have a Vote for Obama sticker on our vehicles.  Since 9/11 none of us are safe from this intrusion into our life. In several instances some of our brothers have been shot to death when pulled over, or physically manhandled by hot-tempered, trigger-finger ready deputies. Some of these deputies actions after pulling us over have resulted in their physically manhandling us, and this treatment is intended to provoke a negative reaction in us so that they can state that we resisted arrest and they can justify their shooting at us or terminating our lives. Some of these deputies raise their voices at us, they use profane language, they sometimes smell like they have been drinking alcohol or smoking weed. Some of these deputies have even dared to rape several women after pulling them over. These ladies have been so afraid of coming forward, that they have hidden these facts for fear of being killed. Then they cover up for each other or wrongly accuse the victims of improper behavior, stacking up false charges and altering Sheriff's files on said victims.
 
There have been several incidences where our people have called the Sheriffs Department to intervene in certain situations that have risen in sections of Lee County, and they have failed to send out deputies to check out the reports in time to avoid a tragedy. If they know it is a neighborhood with a high population of African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, or Creoles, they take an exorbitant amount of time to respond. If the incident takes place in an area of town populated by white people they respond immediately. If they decide to show up at the scene of the incident, they do so after a tragedy has taken place, and only when a great number of people have dialed their number to report the tragedy.  This has to stop. We need a Sheriff who can train his deputies to respond correctly to any situation wherever it may be happening, and to respond immediately. We dont need a Sheriff who is allied with the Grand Lodge of Florida, a haven for Ku Klux Klan bigots, racists and The American Front for Skinhead Gangs and the Aryan Brotherhood. We all need to be protected from people who think they can prey on us. We dont need to live in fear, because that is what the Sheriffs Department intentionally makes us feel when their deputies turn on their lights and pull us over, or when they fail to quickly respond to a 911 emergency call.
 
I want to make it clear that not all deputies behave in this manner, but it seems that racial profiling has now become the norm in our City of Fort Myers and in Lee County. It is rare for us to see a Sheriffs deputy pulling over a white man even when they see them speeding in an area with a set speed limit sign indicating what the speed limit is and which is not to be exceeded.  Some of these same deputies turn on their lights only to run a red light and not have to wait, and as soon as they cross they turn their lights off again. We have followed them straight to the Sheriffs Department Office Parking and seen them talking and jesting like nothing is wrong. If we the African American, Creole, Hispanic, and Latino citizens of Lee County need to keep the laws regulating speed limits and stopping at red lights, then the deputies need to set the example that we are to follow. When they break the laws, this gives way to Anarchy and a loss of respect towards their office, the government and its laws. They must be held accountable to the same laws that they are responsible for enforcing. If they will not keep the law, then they cant enforce a law on us that they are not willing to respect and keep themselves.  

When Election Day arrives in November, please be sure to remember this report and vote someone else into the Sheriffs Department Office that is not allied to the American Front Skinhead Gangs, The Aryan Brotherhood, The Grand Lodge of Florida, The Ku Klux Klan, or any of the other bigots and racists that seem to want to keep Lee County under the oppression of white men and women. It is time that we vote people from all the minority groups and ethnic backgrounds into office to show off a rainbow of colors in support of equality for everyone. Remember our Great Nation is by the People, for the People and of the People. Your vote can make a difference in bringing about a real change for the better by voting out all these people who discriminate against us and are unfair towards us. It is time to replace them with a group of honorable men and women who will treat everyone equally and fairly. If we have different people of different ethnic backgrounds, color, race, and political ideologies in office, we can believe that that diversity will bring about positive change and harmony in the Lee County Government. However, as long as the Status Quo remains the same by having white men and women in the key seats of power in our Government, then we who are part of the minority will continue to suffer discrimination and abuses at their hand. We will be unable to get jobs for which we qualify on account of their wanting to hire white people for the higher positions within the Lee Government. Again, this discrimination has to stop. We can no longer afford to allow things to remain the same.  Thank you.
