This isn't much to most I am sure, but to me it is significant. I ordered a ring from momsring.com. They sent the ring and everything was fine. My father, an ex-jewler helped me resize the ring. The first tap with the ring stretcher popped out all the stones and we lost one.

The company is denying any responsibility, even though they admit the stones were not moounted with anything more than tension. Nothing on their webiste posts this. How in the world to you set stones by tension and not secure them?

Needless to say I would NEVER use them again. They did not put forth any effort to help me resolve this issue. So my good intentions are now being punished and my wife's mother's ring is worthless.... just like momsring.com.

I am the CEO of momsring.com, and I was dismayed to see that your report is still listed on this website.

First, our policy is to refund the full cost or exchange a ring to any customer who is not satisfied with their purchase. Even if you destroyed the ring with a hammer, you can return it to us and you will receive a full refund.

Second, I appreciate the service that the Rippoff Report provides. When a company is running a scam on the internet, it becomes obvious because there are multiple complaints against them. I invite the web community to search for complaints against our product or service. Yours is the only one, and we have sold many thousands of rings over the past five years.

Third, I was able to track the order that you complained about, and you did not purchase the ring from us. I won't use your name here, but your initials are J.D., and the initials of the person that made the purchase are V.S.

I have sent a private email to V.S., and if he will respond to me I will be happy to send him a refund check, even if he does not return the ring to us. If he had returned the ring, he would have received an immediate refund.

The intentions of ripoffreport are good, but they don't verify claims. If they knew that you were not the customer in this case, they may have asked for a verification from the person who made the purchase.

I stand by the guarantee promise on our website. You must understand that we can't send you a refund check because you didn't buy anything from us. On the other hand, V.S. will receive an immediate refund if he replies to my personal email.

I think this is fair, don't you?

More info Joe - no ripoff, no case

Joe, each page of their website has several links at the top just right of center. The "30 day returns" link give the information I posted. Even without this information, no reasonable person would expect any business to accept the loss of product due to the customer's misuse/abuse.

I looked up ring stretching tools - specifically, a "Ratchburn Ring Stretcher " and guess what? It is NOT to be used on rings with mounted stones!

Here's the info:

Quickly enlarge rings with this easy to use, in expensive tool. Simply, tapping the end spreads the outer mandrel and stretches the ring. For ring sizes 5 or larger. I would have expected the OP's "ex-jeweler" father to have known better.

I'm a computer consultant, and after looking at a picture of the ring with the tension fittings, I could tell that stretching is not the proper method to enlarge such a ring. I have two rings that have stones (mounted with prongs) and during the last 30 years I've gained weight and had them enlarged. Each time the rings were enlarged, I had to pay a jeweler to ADD METAL to the band of the ring to make it larger.

I don't think the OP has a case whatsoever. Perhaps a competant jeweler with a fully equiped jewelry repair shop can remount the stones and replace the one that's now missing.

That information didn't seem to be there when I looked at their return policy a few days ago. In fact, there's a script that you can run in IE that will tell you when a web page was last updated, and it said that it was last updated 1/11/2008. Now, I know it's javascript and I can't vouch for its accuracy, however I do know that when I looked at the return policy the other day I didn't find that particular page. That's not to say it wasn't there, but maybe they should put it in a more obvious place?

Clarification...

I want to make one thing clear, we did not put the ring on a jewelers ring mandrel and bang it to size it, we used a tool similar to a Ratchburn Ring Stretcher (((link redacted))).

We did not "bang" on the ring, we tapped it and the stones popped out.

Return policy is clearly stated on their website:

If you choose to make such a return for replacement or exchange, your credit card will be billed an additional $20 to cover handling and shipping cost of sending you the replacement piece of jewelry. If you choose to simply return an item for refund, we will refund the original purchase price less $15 original shipping cost. Our goal is to make you a satisfied customer and we will do our best to make this happen.

The customer damaged the ring by attempting to stretch it instead of contacting them to exchange it for a larger one.

Further, had the customer paid a jeweler to make the ring larger the PROPER way, adding gold to the band, the ring would not have been damaged.

Sorry, don't know why I missed this.

My father in law did not set the ring on a mandrel and pound it to make it larger, he used something similar to this Rathburn Ring Stretcher, only a nicer one that I cannot find online. Here is a web site showing similar equipment (bottom of the page).

Both sides of the coin

First, OP that ring fell apart because you attempted to "stretch" it, which is NOT what would constitute "normal use". Normal use is putting the ring on a finger, and taking it off a finger. So in that respect, I agree with the employee. However, I looked on the web site in questions, specifically at the 30-day money back guarantee terms, and it very clearly stated "No questions asked". Therefore, if you (Employee) expect anyone to have any confidence in your company, you would honor your own guarantee and either refund the money or replace the ring. It also has the term "for any reason". Nowhere does it stipulate that owner negligence or abuse would void that warranty.

Here is the EXACT response I got from momsring.com when I told them of my problem:

"the particular ring design you selected utilizes a combination of tension setting and a "stopper" prong. Tension setting means the ring has precision grooves that hold a precise size stone under slight pressure on its edges. Under normal wear and tear, these stones do not "pop" out or change position."

1 = Tension settings and stopper prong? Why does their site not state that?
2 = Grooves and pressure? Why does their site not state that?
3 = Normal wear and tear? Define normal?
4 = They provide NO information regarding care of the ring or that it is fragile.

The ring fell apart. Period. They are denying ALL responsibility for the ring. They could have VERY easily said "sounds like a problem, let me see if we can help" or maybe "send it back and we'll insert a new stone for $??". But instead I was told "I am sorry I can't offer more help in this but it seems the ring has been asked to do something it was not designed to do and it responded as you describe."

So much for their 30 day money back guarantee.

Whithout question I told them I was going to go after them. They are a VERY dishonest company and did NOTHING along the lines of customer satisfaction. I order on line frequently and this is only the second time I have EVER been completely screwed and provided NO customer service from the company I ordered from. Of course I'm going to try to encourage poeople not to shop with them. Duh!!!

Momsring.com Statement of Facts in This Case

This customer was provided a ring that has been sold to hundreds of others with never a problem reported. By his admission, he and others attempted to "stretch" the finger size of the ring by forcing it onto a jewelers ring mandrel (metal shaft used to measure ring sizes) and then "tapping" it to force it further down the shaft.

The ring design uses tension setting to hold the stones in place and under normal wear conditions, the stones will never "pop" out. The design can be seen at this location:

We explained all of this to the customer and also explained that their treatment of this ring was abuse since rings do not "stretch". He wished to hear none of it but wished only to tell us we were not honest vendors. He later sent us an email promising to spread his negative opinions about us throughout the Internet community, as he is now doing here. Sadly such people exist but for each of these we happily report there are hundreds of nice, rational and honorable consumers too, and we proudly serve them on our website store.

How Many Jewelers Does It Take To Re-Size A Ring?

"My father, an ex-jewler(it's spelled jeweler) helped me resize the ring". I wouldn't "eat" that one. It seems neither one of you know what you are doing, otherwise you would have been able to recognize the way the stones were mounted and would have taken the appropriate care when attempting to size the ring and not attempted to "stretch" the ring. Been in the business 24+ years and see bad jobs by bad "jewlers" all the time. I'm surprise your father didn't make the ring for you.
