My first digital scale was made by a company named My Weigh. This cheap scale cost around $15 on eBay, and I have subjected it to heavy use with my soap making business.

Since my business is growing, I decided to purchase a more expensive scale because my scale is generally oily from making soap and I am shipping packages nearly every day. I chose the model KD-7000 because of the stainless steel top and the splash shield; all great features for a soap making operation. My decision to purchase another My Weigh scale was based upon the positive experience from my other scale.

Most of the materials I weigh are in grams for precision accuracy, I learned this in my Physics class. This scale weighs to 1 gram for precision accuracy while weighing materials like Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), and the stainless top will not discolor from cleaning off any chemical residue.

I have only used this scale for about three months and once and a while as it turns on it does weird things on the display. Usually if the scale is restarted it will correct itself, I suspected the batteries were getting low; the scale still had the factory batteries in it. One day I turned the scale on to weigh some letters and it displayed an overload error message and will not function at all.

Normally I weigh letters, small packages of one to 12 bars of soap which may weigh up to five pounds. This scale has never been abused, dropped or exceeded the 15 lb rating stated on the bottom. It is my opinion this scale is another manufacturing flaw from CHINA. Yes, I said this scale is made in CHINA like most inexpensive products available today.

The company representative from My Weigh answered my inquiry to send the scale in for repair under their 30 year warrantee. This service requires a $35.00 service fee equivalent to the replacement cost or a 20% discount on the purchase of a new scale. The warrantee will only be validated if their technicians determine if the scale has not been abused by shock loading, exceeding the maximum weight or been subjected to corrosive materials. There is no guarantee this scale will be replaced as defective, it is based upon the technician's statement.

Here is the dilemma, do I send this scale in for repair under their warrantee with no guarantee it will be replaced, or do I purchase another scale? Hmmm, this is a no brainer; I found some blogs online where others have had the same or similar problems with this same and similar model of digital scales made by My Weigh. It is in my best interest to find a more reputable scale manufacturer because every time I have to replace a piece of equipment it costs me an undue amount of money.

We as Americans demand quality merchandise from companies who outsource all their products to make a fast buck and who will not replace defective goods in good faith. This tells me that the company My Weigh is aware of the defective products and is using the warrantee as a sales tool to boost profits. This scale originally cost me $40.00, to pay another 35.00 for the questionable warrantee service is absurd considering this scale has seen very little use under normal conditions.

The My Weigh brand of digital scales is questionable, model KD-7000 in my opinion is junk and is a rip-off to have it repaired if it breaks and it most likely will not function more than one year. When this scale works it is a decent product although China made goods is in the spotlight due to quality concerns.
