This scam is appearing to be more the norm than usual. Independent sales trainers post in Craigslist looking to attract the interest of potential autosales candidates. They have you come into a dealership for an interview, where almost 95% of candidates are told they can start a 3 day sales training class prior to starting at a dealership. At the interview they qualify everyone by asking "if your car breaks down, do you have $500-$600 to cover the costs of repairs?"
Within the first 2 hours of training all you here is how much money you're going to make and that you must never lie in the autosales business. Then the sales "trainer" goes on to tell endless BS stories about his personal and business experiences. Our sales trainer was very entertaining - Ivy league education with a Biochemical degree, his dad has 6 different engineering degrees (later talks about his financial hardship upbringing), broke his neck, 3 back surgeries, had friends that turned down professional sports to sell cars, best friend was brutally abused as a child, boasted that he owns ~20 properties, 33 cars..... it just went on and on. Within the 1st 30 minutes you will easily see they are selling training.
The brief training that is provided is actually pretty good. However the "sales trainer" is not employed by the Dealership. He is a sales/training contractor banking a % for every student that signs up. BTW, payment is only accepted in cash or certified checks.
I decided not to give these guys $500. I've kept in touch with a couple of folks that paid for training and they are still going through the process. Three days after training and they have not been offered a position, and everyone consistently ignores questions about the "$500 a week base pay during training stated in the Craigslist Ads." I will assume the candidates that show promise will eventually be offered employment. Meanwhile they're taking advantage of many folks that are looking for work.
So much for "never tell a lie!"
