I received a phone call tonight from a gentleman with thick middle eastern accent, told me he was from the US Government and I had been approved for a $5k grant from the government, which I "never, ever had to pay back." Immediately skeptical, I began asking questions about why I was getting this Grant, etc. The man became somewhat agitated, and began spewing out all of my personal information. He said that if I don't give him this information, he'd remove my name from the list and give the money to a charity group instead, and then asked me if that's what I wanted or wouldn't I rather take the money (that I'd never, ever have to pay back)? So I confirmed the information he read off to me.....when he asked my date of birth, I asked why he didn't already have this information? I told him that if he was from the 'government' then he should already have my information. He said he needed to verify if I was over 18 yrs old. I was still hesitant, so he says to me 'geez, what can I do with your date of birth?' I asked if there was some way to verify, he said he already had my information - began reading off my personal info again. So I agreed when he asked if my info was correct, however when he asked me if I had a bank account to transfer the funds, I asked why didn't he just send me a check? He replied that he is not authorized to send out checks, they have to direct deposit the money because it's not safe to mail out a check to me. At that point, I began to get even more nervous, so I asked for a number to call back and verify the information. He sounded irritated, but he said fine, call our customer service department....

The phone number he gave me was 801-471-0799. He said he'd call me back in 5-10 minutes to get the rest of my information. I began to search for information on-line regarding the 'customer service' phone number he gave me. When I called this phone number it went to a voice mail system (sounded like a personal voice mail system). So I put this phone number into a google search and came upon a story of the NATIONAL HEALTH NET ON-LINE scam. It appears as though people are being charged fees once they give out their bank account information. I don't know if it's related, but the story on-line shows a single mother in Florida was scammed, and I also happen to be a single mother. The thought of a grant for $5k that doesn't have to be paid back is a tempting offer. Luckily I didn't give out my bank information, but it seems as though they may have already had all of my information. I don't know what can be done, but people should be aware of this scam.
I never received a call back from this man after the 5-10 minutes he promised.

Please forward this information to anyone you know. It's Christmas time, and I know that for a split second, I was tempted. For people that are struggling more than me, I can see how easy it would be to fall for something like this. The guy called me on my cell number, and when the call came in, it showed that the phone# was: 02

That's it. Not even a normal phone number....
PLEASE BE CAREFUL YOU GUYS.......
