Moving from Nashville, TN to Virginia I contacted several movers online for estimates. Based on a detailed inventory list I provided (none send out estimators), they ranged from $1,750 to around $2,200. I opted for an outfit out of Florida called Nationwide Movers USA. Say hello to the movers from hell!

When the movers arrived, their brusque driver Vassily did a quick visual scan then had me sign a series of papers; one of which was a blank bill of lading (no mention of the original estimate appeared though there was a box on the document for it). The truck was then loaded and when it was ready the papers reappeared. He had written in on the previously signed bill of lading the amount of $5,432 -- more than three times the written estimate I had received of $1,781! And then demanded that half the amount -- $2,716 -- be paid immediately with the rest due in cash on delivery.

Would you have been pleased? Would anyone? You have an official quote supplied by the vendor in hand, then they hit you with a massive increase when they have your property held hostage.

Sure I protested, but I was due to sign papers on my house the next day and had to vacate. So I paid the amount demanded and that night began a protest with the company. And things just kept getting worse.

David (no one in this company will tell you their last name) was the person who handles "money matters." Not surprisingly he is nearly impossible to reach. When I finally did he was very blunt. In his heavy Russian accent, which they all have except for (not surprisingly) the salesman, Marty, he said I signed the bill of lading and therefore owed the ridiculous upcharge. They were clearly in violation of the Department of Transportation rules which state: The Mover cannot charge more than 110 of estimate (that is 10% above estimate) once the truck is loaded unless agreed upon prior to loading."

David's retort was predictable: "You had more items than indicated when the estimate was issued." Three times as much? Three times the weight? Absolutely ridiculous. Therein lies the scam: low ball the competition to get the job; then charge the trapped customer as much as you can once the truck is loaded.

A month later -- following a heated 15-minute argument -- a reduction to about 2 1/2x the original estimate was hammered out and my goods delivered. The end to one more "mover from hell" nightmare.

So why does this go on? Many, many others have similar tales from fraudulent interstate movers -- many of whom are headquartered in Florida for some reason.

Lack of enforcement of the rules and regulations issued by the Department of Transportation is clearly evident. If no one holds these businesses accountable, then violations will go on with impunity. And the public suffers.

And what of the state of Florida's attorny general? They set up in your state for a reason. Do you wish to be a sanctuary for latter day pirates?

While I appreciate the opportunity to vent by telling my tale, I would be far more gratified if Nationwide Movers USA and their kind are held responsible for their rapacious business practices.
