I moved cross country to be closer to my son.  I got 4 estimates for the move and went with the middle priced estimate from North American Master Lines.  I informed the sales person that I had moved long distance in 2009 and the weight was just under 4,800 pounds.  I also told him that for this move I would not be moving my 2 couches, dining room table, 6 chairs and buffet with hutch.  I estimated the weight at 4,400 pounds.

When the movers arrived, they showed up 1 day early, and said they could help me with some last minute items.  Unbeknownst to me, their "help" would cost me an additional $700.  They never provided me with an itemized price list for additional packing material and labor until all of my items were on their truck.  The sales person told me that stretch wrap and other items were included, which they were not.

After all of my belongings were loaded on their truck, the movers told me I had 1,050 cu ft or 7,700 lbs based on some industry average calculation.  I told them it was impossible that it could weigh that much.  He proceeded to tell me that if he did not have to go to the truck scales that night, he would say I had 900 cu ft or 6,300 pounds on the truck.  Again, I told him about my previous move and that it could not weigh more than 4,400 pounds.  He proceeded to write on the form that I had 7,700 pounds and he would send me the full truck weight later that night.  Before he left, he gave me a sheet from some truck scale with an empty weight on it.  At $0.50 per pound, I was very upset.

About 3 hours later, he sent me a text message picture of the ticket that showed my contents weighed 6,320 pounds.  I knew the weight was impossible for my belongings, but I could not figure out how they manipulated the weight.  Since my son arrived late into the move, he decided to call the company the next day.

He spoke with a company representative who eventually gave me a $250 discount on the packing material and labor.  He only agreed because we wanted to resolve that issue.  The same company representative did not provide a solution for the weight.  She said the weights came from licensed truck scales and it is what it is.

Several days later the movers arrived with my belongings, but they could not figure out how to get into my complex even though I saw 2 other moving companies with big trucks here before.  The driver said he could unload my belongings into a Uhaul and I could get other movers to unload it, which I agreed to.

After the Uhaul was loaded, my son when to the truck scales to get the truck weighed full.  The next day after it was emptied, he took it back to be weighed empty.  Guess what? The difference was 4,240 pounds.  North American Master Lines somehow overweighed by belongings by 2,080 pounds.

My son has been trying to get this resolved.  They are now telling us that we could have asked for a reweigh or could have done a witness weighing.  Since they did not offer these options earlier, it seems convenient they would offer them now that they have been caught stealing from a senior citizen on a fixed budget.  It is amazing to me that these types of crooks can get away with taking advantage of people when they are at their most vulnerable.
