Unfortunately there seems to be a growing number of companies feeding on the unemployed or underemployed workers out there.  I had a similar experience in San Diego where I drove 70 miles for an interview just to find out the job was commission only with no paid gas, travel, etc... and I was to shadow someone for a day unpaid as my training.  Since then, I have had my radar on to these companies and today I received not one but two emails that were written exactly the same from two different companies:

I'd like thank you for your recent application as well as for your interest in a position with our company.  My manager and I have been going through resumes and applications and after reviewing yours, we felt your previous experiences might help make you a good match for the position we have available.  He is interested in scheduling an interview with you so that we can discuss the position more in detail, however, we did have a few questions we wanted to clarify before moving forward with an appointment.  Please contact me on my direct line at 626-447-1850 to go over everything and I look forward to meeting with you soon!

NOTE:  2 different company names with the same address and phone number and identical letters inviting me to an interview?  Why on earth would any legitimate company do this?  When you get these types of emails, google the phone numbers as well as the names of the companies.

What really upsets me about these companies is that it takes time, energy and resources to job search and when misleading or deceptive job ads are posted, it takes resources away from those who really are trying to provide for their family.  Any company that is asking you to SPEND YOUR OWN MONEY to work for them is a scam.  For those who were forced to be at a certain location (such as a NASCAR tent or at a physical location such as a gas station) for a set number of hours, check with the department of labor standards as I believe any company MUST pay you minimum wage if you are required to work specific hours - unless they have you as a 1099 independent contractor and if they ask you to be one of those, be even more wary and ask a lot of questions before putting up your own money to sell their products/services.


Good luck to all of those out there trying to find work - don't get frustrated by the scammers, stick to your job search and you will find a place to work that will be both personally and financially rewarding.
