Oxford Seminars Fake money back Guarantee scam Los Angeles California

I am the person from rebuttal #2.  It has been three years since that post and 5 1/2 years since my course at Oxford Seminars.
I finished the full year in Korea then went back to Thailand.  Various jobs told me they preferred a man, some said a British English teacher and one told me the parents want only Caucasians.  So it was back to government Mathayom schools in rural areas just as my pre-TEFL days in 2005.
So I worked one full schoolyear there then went to Vietnam.  I got hired to work with Language Link but they made a small deal about how the course was 60 hours and not 120.
I am friends with two former classmates via Facebook.  I still have their book and backup lessons and used it recently.
It still is what it is and that's a 60 hour TESL or TEFL (difference?) course.  It's not a master's or state credential, etc.

Before I got my TEFL at Oxford, I had already taught ESL for 1 1/2 years in Thailand. Each interview I had asked me if I had a TEFL and I said no. I still got employed at a university and a public school but I may have been rejected at others because of my then lack of a TEFL Certificate. So I went for it when I went back to L.A.

Well, it did teach me some things I didn't already know so I feel it was worth it. However, I already had an ESL job in L.A. when I got it and utilized what I learned right away. They told us the first day it holds no weight in California and it doesn't. I never got promoted above substitute in CA and had to take the CBEST, CSET, ect.

Today I teach in Korea. I'm the only one with the TEFL. Now I hear Thailand REQUIRES the TEFL Certificate; and they might be the only place in the world that requires it!

I don't regret taking the course; it taught me some things I didn't already know and I still use their website for general information on the ESL markets around the world. But it didn't give me any extra qualifications. However, I could probably teach anywhere in Thailand now, but why would I would make 4 times less what I do here with more horror stories irrelevant to this topic.

Oxford Seminars isnt a scam. They do provide the service that they promise to give you. Its just that there course is pretty much unnecessary and not really recognized in most of the world. Some of there practices like the "money back guarantee" you really need to look at the fine print. You have to be "qualified" to teach in 4 different countries and apply to 5 schools in all of those countries. To get your money back you need proof of not being hired. Most schools arent going to send you a letter or rejection there just not going to hire you. And to be "qualified" to work there the oxford course has nothing to do with it. Its all based on your college/highschool education. If you have a bachelors degree you can pretty much teaqch anywhere without taking a stupid 3 weekend tesl course. The only time you might want it is if you only have a higschool diploma and even then you would take a much better course than Oxford I would hope.
