I worked for Papa Johns as a asst manager then as a general manager. Heres my story.... I was hired in January by a District Manager in a small office beside a Papa Johns. The interview was professional and the District Manager was very open about the "situation he was in" Saying things like " I'm taking over for so and so" , "I want to make some changes" and so on he led me to believe he was ready to staff a professional high paced restaurant and put me in as a assistant manager and bonus and 48 hour work week yada yada i wont bore you any longer, First week at the store GM quit (it was super bowl Sunday) I worked open shift till close that day. I thought the GM was dumb for quitting i was wrong.

I finished all my PJ training and boom i was a GM. I have had a lot of fast food and pizza experience (8 years) before starting at Papa John's so i knew what i was doing from the start. Month goes by I'm restaffing, cleaning, training and increasing sales (marketing) 80 hours a week. I was the only Food Sanitation certified person in the company at this point so i made sure my store was clean my food was fresh and rotated properly also while making estimated labor and cost guidelines set forth by the District Manager.. you know doing my job.

The District Manager who was one of the greatest DM's i have ever worked for ( worked for Wendy's 30 years as a DM retired until Papa Johns Begged him/recruited him back from retirement) was always on task and did his job correctly. He quit after i hit two month's at PJ's. I now know why. I began receiving calls from a woman who was the wife of the owner of the store i ran (I believe they own around twenty stores all over the U.S ) The caller ID said Papa Johns corporate. She demanded i fax her certain info everyday payroll food, cost etc. I did as told. A week or two went by everyday calls... nit picking .01 percent differences in food and so on. Then we have a meeting with the owner and his wife. Guess who they work for ??? yep Papa John him self they are telling us all this wonderful papa john crap, about how he worked on john slauctercer house and he goes golfing all this crap. Then he says i let the dm go and i wont be hiring another one. Then he procides to fire a gm in front of all of us. After the GM left the owner and his wife were laughing about it.... very unprofessional. Then they proceeded to tell me in private they liked my work and the condition of my store However i was going to have to fire my asst manager and let all my inside pizza makers go. I argued but they won.

I continued working for them another month. By then i had figured it out they were losing big money as owners they both had day jobs as papa john corporate people and they had investors who were mad. They had fired there accountant and i believe they were doing there own accounting. Mainly cause one day a older man in a very expensive sedan showed up said he was a doctor and the primary investor in the restaurant that i was operating (showed me proof) asked me how it was going, and i told him the truth sales figures, actual cost of operation, and Profit. He was very surprised, I printed him copies and he left. The next week was h**l the owners wife called every day twice a day demanding i work 7 days a week open to close cut my food truck orders in half. Took my bonus not that i had ever got one anyway.

Then on a Monday the two "owners" showed up while i was opening and began to scream and yell at me threating to fire me and sue me and everything else they could make up. I politely said to the I am confused and amazed that they would act so unprofessional they immediately left and the next day i was fired by email. I was happy because in Illinois if you get fired and they have no proof you get unemployment. Thank god they paid there unemployment insurance yearly. They still operate the location using illegal immigrant labor ( i Have Proof) They been busted it was in the local paper. The two Owners still work for PJ corporate.

I am glad i got to work for Papa John's with out this experience i would have never met corporate thieves or learned how bad business people operate how to avoid them and of course Ripoff Report.

Sorry So Long

P.S. They ship the chicken to the stores and its usually expired when it is received i never sold it .... but i bet you a night on a toilet that no one even checks the dates now......

You should know that just because you work for a franchise (if the store is part of a chain of twenty it is a very SMALL franchise), then you are at the mercy of the franchisee. The Papa John's "corporate," you keep referring to is not the actual corporation but the owners of the franchise. You should stop placing the blame on the actual Papa John's company. All of the problems I have with PJ's I place on the actual owners of my franchise (which is Houston Pizza Ventures). I don't think your post is unfounded, I see very similar situations happening often in my own store to a lesser degree. As far as them claiming to golf with Papa John himself, I doubt this. But even so, this doesn't make a difference in the fact that he wasn't your boss anyhow. He isn't really anyone's boss as he is now only a spokesperson for the company.
