The owner of Pet Paradise, of Marlboro, NJ, sold me a puppy 4-5 weeks ago. When I picked up the puppy everyone was so nice and friendly, because I was spending over $2000 on a dog + supplies.

They told me that we have to buy their dog food that is sold there b/c that is what they have been feeding my dog since they got him. Well, when we took him home, not only did he still have "kennel cough"/tracheaitis, but he wasn't eating the food. 4-5 weeks he still dislikes the food that they gave me. At the time of purchasing the dog, I bought a 18lb bag of dog food.

Since my dog doesn't like that brand, and the bag I have is unopened, I tried to return it, for a store credit. They wouldn't allow me to do so, said it was prohibited by NJ STATE LAW to accept the return package of dog food. Note: I returned a similar bag of dog food to Petsmart the same day without a receipt and unopened, and they gave me a full cash refund. They said that there is no state law that prohibits this return. Isn't that funny?

After speaking with Dana West (co-owner of Pet Paradise) on the phone, and explaining my situation, she began to get very nasty with me and told me that her dog food is the "best on the market".

All of her dogs that they sell, love the food. That may be true while they are there, but when they come home, they hate it! Even their own veterinarian has stated this claim. Dana told me that she was not giving me a credit/refund in any amount and told me to leave the store. Nice way to treat a customer that just bought a $2000 puppy from you 4 weeks ago and $250 worth of supplies, crate and dog food.

This place is not being run in a good business manner at all and should be reported to every business reporting agency!

Back to the original complaint ....

AUTHOR: Shawangunk - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 27, 2007

Matthew, I do find it a bit odd that you are upset over a bag of dog food and not the fact that you were sold a sick puppy. But anyway ...

It sounds like you already received restitution for your inconvenience since it appears that you took that same bag of food to Petsmart and returned it there for a store credit. (No - I do not believe that it was a "similar bag" as you state, because no one buys TWO 18-lb bags of food for ONE puppy!)

In closing -- there was NO rip off as far as the original complaint is concerned. One store accepts returns on food, and another store does not. Stores have the right to make their own policies, and it is YOUR responsibility to understand the return policy when doing business with a store.

Consumers: You have rights under the NJ Puppy Lemon Law

AUTHOR: Libby - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 27, 2007

To those who have purchased sick puppies from Pet Paradise: please contact NJ Consumers Against Pet Shop Abuse (NJCAPSA) at info@njcapsa.org or call 908-325-0333 to submit your complaint. We have more complaints against this store than any other in NJ.

Pet purchasers have RIGHTS under the NJ Pet Purchase Protection Act (Puppy Lemon Law) and you are entitled to reimbursement of veterinary bills up to twice the puppy's purchase price, plus tax, if you have an unfit for sale certificate from your veterinarian.

Don't fall prey to Pet Paradise's requirement to submit your bills to PET GUARDIAN in Jackson, NJ. It is registered to JOSEPH SANTANASTASIO, husband of Dana West, co-owner of Pet Paradise! It's their private warranty company and NJ laws supersede any so-called private pet health warranty. Many stores hide behind these bogus entities in an effort to circumvent the Puppy Lemon Law and delay your reimbursement.

Please contact us if you haven't already. NJCAPSA will walk you through the complaint process, put you in touch with the proper agencies that regulate this store, and stay the course until you have been duly compensated.

Thank you,

Libby Williams

Pet Paradise gets their puppies from puppy mills!

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 28, 2007

I am familiar with Pet Paradise, as my in-laws live in Manalapan (just off of Route 9 near the library) and bought a sick puppy from that place last year. The puppy ultimately died, and even though my brother-in-law works in the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, my father-in-law had a difficult time getting his money back from Dana West.

They didn't ask my advice before buying that puppy, but if they had, I would have told them to look for a reputable breeder instead of patronizing a place that gets their puppies from puppy mills.

I know for a fact that Pet Paradise (it should be called Puppy Hell) gets their puppies from filthy dirty puppy mills located in Pennsylvania and the Midwest (I have seen the invoices). These puppies are treated inhumanely, and they are usually sick. Many of them die from diseases such as Parvo.

The only way to put the puppy mills out of business is to stop buying from pet store that buy their puppies from them.

This is the most unprofessional, unethical, and dysfunctional business that I have ever had to deal with.

DON'T BUY A PET FROM THIS PLACE. THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS "AFTER" THE SALE, as they claim they do!
