The owner of Phoenix Tattoo Company located in Tempe, a.k.a Eric James likes to constantly remind you of how professional and honest he is, but believe me, he is anything but. I chose Phoenix Tattoo Company and the owner Eric, to do my tattoo because of his outstanding portfoilo online.

When I went to his tattoo shop, he seemed nice enough and he asked for a $100 deposit to hold my appointment for a tattoo two weeks out. I questioned him on the $100 deposit, saying what is I do not like your tattoo design? He said he would draw as many times as needed to make the design what I wanted. I gave him a drawing of what I wanted my tattoo to look like, which he said he would change a little to make it more acceptable for a real tattoo. I also stated I wanted the tattoo to have anatomy similar to a bird's real wings. You see, I was getting an angel wings tattoo on my back.

However, when he e-mailed me the design two days later, it didn't look anything like a real bird's wing. It looked like he just drew the feathers from the top of his head. I asked him to re-draw the design. Eric seemed extremely preturbed on the phone I would question his artwork, though he agreed to re-draw it. A couple days later, I sent him an e-mail with more reference pictures of what I would like the design to look like.

He did not get to my second design very quickly ether. It was only after repeatedly calling his shop ever two to three days to ask where the redesign was, that he finally redrew it a week and a half later. He would always tell me he was busy and would get to it eventually. Then a couple days before the sheduled appointment and before I got the final design ,I told him I was not comfortable with what was going on. I wanted at least some of my deposit back. He told me the deposit was absolutely not refundable. He also told me I didn't know what I wanted my own tattoo to look like, only he as a professional tattoo artist should know what it would look like. I told him on the phone that is he really knew what I wanted, then draw the second design and I would tell him what I thought of it. At this point, I was not feeling too happy about what was going on. He was not listening to what I wanted for my own tattoo and on top of this, was being rude.

The design in the end was still not what I wanted, but it was much closer to what I was looking for. I then asked him over a text message what color it would be? In the e-mail to Eric, I asked for a specific color, black with green/blue highlights. He told him the wings would be brown, like we originally spoke about. The only problem was, I never asked for the wings to be brown, ever. He just made this part up. It was at that time I told him I was cancelling my appointment. He has not spoken to me since then.

He still has my $100 deposit and has stopped redrawing the design, even though he originally stated he would work with me until I got what I wanted. I feel I have been stolen from, lied to, and abandoned by Erix James. I would never recommend him or his company to anyone wanting a tattoo.

Response to So Shocked

AUTHOR: Rebecca - ()

POSTED: Monday, August 25, 2014

First, I would like to say that my complaint has been on ripoff report for a very long time and since Eric himself never did have the decency to reply to it, I have to wonder if you are an actual customer of his or if you may be Eric himself, trying finally to cover up the black mark on his record.

That said, I have gotten second opinions from other professional tattoo artists in the Phoenix area on what happened between Eric and myself. The real deal breaker and final straw to why Eric lost my business was because he told me he did not want to make the wings the color blue. He said that by making them blue, the original tattoo would bleed through and I wouldn't like the finished product.

I have since gotten another artist to cover my old tattoo up with blue angel wings. The old colors never bled through and the tattoo looks fantastic. I even get many compliments on it. My new artist has since told me he doesn't know why Eric would refuse to make them the color I wanted, since the original tattoo was so light and there was no chance of a yellow/orange tattoo bleeding through to dark blue colors anyway.

So if Eric had not tried to lie to me, wouldn't I surely have a messed up tattoo now? It's even been redone for a few months now, giving lots of time for the colors to resurface. But no, it's fine. This leads to me to the conclusion that the only reason Eric did not want the wings to be blue, was because he personally preferred brown or he simply wanted to give me a hard time. Ether way, it's not how a professional acts around clients.

Even if Eric is best the artist in the whole world, he charges "small" deposits, or if I was being unreasonable with the way he was designing the wings, he did refuse to make the wings blue for his own personal and pity reasons. I know this because of the color of my tattoo today. The truth about Eric's lies are basically permanently etched into my skin.

So Shocked

First off, I cant believe you have ever had a tattoo before. How do you expect an artist to remember every detail of what you want. When you go in to have the tattoo done is when you go through what colors you want it to be and fine tuning of the drawing is completed then. As a consumer of tattoos, I am totally shocked at your review as you sound uneducated in the world of having a good artist.

Your lucky the deposit was only a 100.00. Most charge way more, I would like a Tattoo with a Artist in Ohio, Durb Morrison and its a 500.00 deposit.  I personally have had 7 tattoos with Eric and every member of my family has at least 3 from him also. You are in the wrong to write this horrible review, As Eric has always been and still is very honest and is A Fantastic artist.

The drawing never has the fine feather details those are done in the tattoo on your skin.

Deposits are never refundable!

Your attitude ( of being the center of his professional world)needs adjusting as he already drew it up 3 times!

He drew it up  he got paid end of story!

You sound like a petulant child in your review.
