A young guy (approx 22-25 years of age) named Eule (?) knocked on my door said he was with GE but mentioned Devcon Security & Pinnacle Security. He had all 3 logos embroidered on his shirt. It was never clear who he worked for & he flashed his ID so quickly you couldn't have made it out. Said he was working in the neighborhood & that all of the land lines were going to be changed out to cell signals for security systems. He made it sound like our homeowners association was leading this change. He used a scare tactic about phone lines being cut. He asked questions like "Do you have a pet, what kind?", "What kind of security pad do you have?", "Do you have a motion sensor & glass break detector and where are they located?", "What area of your home do you feel is least protected?". I was standing on my porch. I didn't answer his questions. My front door was slightly cracked. He proceeded to look at the hard wiring around the door casing for my current security system. I moved further down off the steps to ask him questions and get him away from my front door. I finally got him down by the driveway. I asked for a business card but he said he would be back in the area tomorrow & I should just catch him then. This all happened around 8:15 in the evening...long after a respectable security company would be working. And a respectable security company would have called me to schedule an appointment. I checked with my neighbors and he did not visit their house.

I called the police and file a report and called Pinnacle to give them a piece of my mind about their sales tactics. The sales department defended the way they approach sales calls & go door to door. I reported them to my homeowners association & informed all parties that I would call the police if I saw him in the neighborhood again.

No one should ever approach sales with scare tactics when making sales calls. This company was completely out of line!

I don't think it's fair to slam the young man because you didn't even ask for his license. Door to door salesman will have a license for what they are doing. In most cities we understand that it is a requirement to present our license when asked. That verifies that we have been registered by the local authorities and are permitted to do what we do. Perhaps the young man is a very inexperienced or improperly trained sales representative, but generally when it comes to selling to customers who currently have an alarm system an import point we do bring up is that there have been landlines cut by the "real" criminals in many areas of the country and particularly California. If you have an older ADT system you may be the subject of such a threat only because most ADT landline systems that are several years old have a date when they were installed that is printed on the sign. Criminals have become aware of that and know that landline services can be cut and the alarm will no longer be able to call out. If you have a landline system this should be no surprise to you if you read through you agreement with the company. It plainly states that if there is a malfunction with the landline the system will be unable to call out. Now granted, if a salesman presents that information unclearly or without the right demeanor it could seem to be a scare tactic, but even ADT has generally been very good about sending out information explaining to their customers the need for an update; many disregard it because it will cost them money. I myself make attempts to work closely with home owners associations and neighborhood watch programs because the people invested in those organiztions make great customers and are invested in the ideas of bettering the community and protecting homes. I hate to hear when people use neighborhood associations as a fake part of a pitch, because what we sell really is a valuable product to many and it is just as easy to actually speak with a neighborhood board and explain what you are doing and make a positive impression as it is to build up a false pitch and have to dodge neighbors who talk to each other. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but next time give the representative a chance to present himself, some of the newer representatives have a legitimate case but are learning still how to do their job. It sounds like to me that he was a young man with less experience, i know much better now than i did several years ago what questions are appropriate to ask and what may seem a little sketchy to a home owner- though i've never tried to seem illegitimate, i will admit that there was a learning period where i could tell i made a customer feel uncomfortable and felt bad and embarrased later on. Ask for a liscense, we certainly appreciate you asking us more than we do a police officer that you've called, the reason being that having a police officer stop us in the road can turn an entire neighborhood sour towards our companys's reputation. We are trying to provided a product that can better protect homes and families, and generally we are not trying to pester people. I apologize for your negative experience, we are only human and have to learn like everyone else.
