Porsche should know about this customer service problem.

I recently sought assistance in finding a source to service my 1978 Porsche Targa 911SC. The car has been stored in a garage and is not currently operable. In my quest to identify a service location, I visited the Ray Catena Porsche dealership on Route 1 in Edison, NJ. I entered the Service Area of this dealership and saw four desks with service representatives, three of whom were assisting other customers. I stood waiting for the fourth service rep to conclude his business on the telephone. No one looked up or acknowledged my presence for 10-15 minutes. I then took a seat in the adjacent waiting room - still in view of the four personnel - and waited another 15 minutes before anyone asked if they could be of assistance. The gentleman who had fielded several telephone calls finally acknowlegded me and said "someone will be with you shortly".

A service representative appeared several minutes later to ask what he could do for me. I proceeded to explain my situation (as described above) and asked if I could make an appointment to have my Porsche serviced at that location. He very curtly advised me that "there are no serv ice personnel at this dealership who could work on a 1978 Porsche and that it would be impossible to find parts for that car." I politiely asked if he could check with the other service personnel in the area to determine if they had any suggestions as to where my car could be serviced. Very reluctantly, he wandered over to one of the desk personnel and quickly returned to advise me that no one had any suggestions for me, thus indicating my time was up there.

As a lifelong Porsche owner (my first was a l969 911T coupe until I purchased the 1978 911 SC Targa), I was extremely taken aback by the rude attitude and outright dismissal I had experienced at this dealership. Both my previous Porsches had been purchased brand new at dealerships in Virginia and California. Both of those experiences helped to cement my brand loyalty. This abrupt dismissal was most unexpected from members of the "Porsche community."

Gotcha

AUTHOR: James MK - (USA)

I see what you mean. Indeed one would expect a more agreeable attitude on the part of a Porsche dealership. In his short-term vision the guy figured there was no money to be made off you with this car but it doesn't seem to have dawned on the idiot that he'll never make any money selling you a new car either because you'll go elsewhere thanks to him being such a butt. Anyway any respectable Porsche dealer should know about reliable local independent shops where you could take your vintage car to for servicing.

I think you should notify Porsche USA about this dealer's attitude, it is also their reputation that is at stake, not just his.

Mistreatment at Ray Catena Porsche, Edison New Jersey

Yes, they could have suggested a place to take it but chose to be rude and impatient!  I guess you did not read carefully how I described my treatment.  They offered ABSOLUTELY NO REFERRAL INFORMATION.  That was part of my point.

Sad But True

I don't think your experience would have been anymore fruitful regardless of the make of the car. A vintage car is a vintage car, if I showed up at, say, a Ford dealership with 30+ year-old car they would likely suggest I deal with independent shops that specialize in vintage cars and parts because, sad but true, expertise and parts for such vehicles are quite rare indeed.
