After having a large tree come down in our yard, I contacted the Deckyard in St Charles IL and they directed my inquiry to Bob Hopkins at Prairies Hardscape & Design.

I entered into a $2000.00 contract with Prairies Hardscape & Design to prepare the yard for the season, plant several trees and bushes and repair areas in our brick patio that had settles or needed service. I also pre-paid a 1000.00 deposit for services on a second contract related to repairing damage that was done by a tree falling which was being submitted for insurance.

Due to the company's lack of responsiveness, they were unable to complete the work last fall, however after much conversation they promised to do so this spring and I agreed to allow them to no refund my deposit at that time. After waiting for the temperature to be adequate for finishing the service (in April), I contacted Bob Hopkins and he promised to be out on several occasions, however never showed to complete work. After multiple attempts to get the work complete I finally told him to refund the 1000.00 that I had paid for the work related to the insurance claim (as that work had never been started). He agreed and after several weeks of promising it was in the mail, blaming it on his accountant, and that he would meet me to deliver it, etc... He ultimately called me and told me he did not owe me the money. Even the work that was done under the 2000.00 was complete to a substandard level and not what we had agreed upon when he walked with my wife and I describing what his company would do.

I have provided over a year for this company to get their act together and complete the work. I have been forced to even complete some of the work myself so the area was usable after his people came out and spent less than (2) hours (for the 1000.00 worth of work they charged) and then told me they were done. I have logged over 100 call into the company and its attorney. Even the attorney can not get Bob Hopkins to do what he says he will. Appointment after appointment has been blown off, and I am now seemingly left with no alternative but taking action through our court system.

Desired Resolution: At a bare minimum they owe me for the $1000.00 I prepaid for services that were related to damage from the tree falling. I would also like to have some recovery for the poor work that was done.

Finished in two week. Please tell me youre kidding.  The work was never complete and I had to wait 11 months and deal with their attorney to get the percentage of work that was done complete.  Interesting they brought up Insurance fraud (I never did).  Guilty conscious Bob?  I think the copies of the proposals provided by Prairie Hardscape speak for themselves as to who was suggesting insurance fraud.  I had enough sense to never send these in for an insurance claim (however still have them).  The false suggestions in the rebuttal by Prairies Hardscapes is nothing but more than additional propaganda.

I can provide photos of the work (that Prairies Hardscape & Design claims was performed so professionally) that provide proof of the poor workmanship and the unfinished state things were left.  I can provide copies of the phone logs, or wav files of recorded phone messages, and/or documentation proving my claim.  Conversely after several years, they post a series of supposed facts that are without truth (surprise surprise) and cannot be substantiated.

Again: if this does not provide a clear warning not to use this company, please look at their Better Business Bureau rating F

I do hope that the employees that worked on our landscaping and later showed up at our door looking for their pay (since they were not getting paid by Prairie Hardscape and design) ultimately got taken care of.  Especially since, we paid Prairie for the work even though the job was not done and it was not the works fault that ownership did not keep their end of the deal.

Regarding report number #802447

AUTHOR: PrairiesOwner - ()

POSTED: Friday, March 15, 2013

First Fact: The contract for this homeowner Dale Vanleeuwen was not $2,000.00.  The final contract and signed contract was $2,800.00.

Second Fact: There was only one contract.  The reason Dale has stated there were two contracts is because he attempted to claim a fallen tree to his insurance company to collect and purchase additional landscaping as previously stated by him.

Third Fact:  Prairie's Hardscape & Design, Inc. provided the one and only contract to Dale Vanleeuwen, he signed and provided the necessary down payment.

Fourth Fact:  All work per contract included repairing his patio in low spots, installing two new trees @ 2 inch. , 5 lilacs @ 5 gallons, new edging, mulch and a fall clean up, repairing two Unilock Olde Quarry coping units on seat wall due to a tree that had fallen in a storm and removal and disposal of said tree.  All work was completed except sand to be filled in all joints of pavers due to weather.

Fifth Fact:  All contracted work was completed at time of service within  2 weeks of contract signing and job was completed prior to his Insurance Adjuster approving claim for his fallen tree. Dale Vanleeuwen then paid full amount upon completion of job due to his satisfaction as stated per contract.

Sixth Fact: Again after all work was complete, Dale Vanleeuwen paid in full as stated and agreed upon on the one and only contract.

Seventh Fact: Days after final payment was received, Mr. VanLeeuwen stated his insurance company wasn't approving his insurance claim payout he requested prior to signing our contract.  Dale then asked Prairie's Hardscape & Design, Inc. to "refund" some if not all landscaping.

Eighth Fact: After Dale Vanleeuwen was notified approximately 3 months later that Prairie's Hardscape & Design, Inc. could not refund landscaping, Dale was contacted by our attorney.

Ninth Fact: Our attorney  notified Dale in person with the owner of the company that landscaping will not and can not be refunded.  Dale then preceeded to violate the "defamation of character" law by publishing false information through out many internet sites including the better business bureau.

Tenth and final Fact: Fraudulent Insurance claims will not and never will be tolerated by Prairie's Hardscape & Design, Inc.  All customers are not pressured to pay until job is complete upon satisfaction and a final walk through is completed per our contract.

Prairie's Hardscape of Sugar Grove, IL is reputable

Prairie's Hardscape just completed a rather large hardscape and landscape project at our home in the Northwest suburbs.  Bob Hopkins was very thorough in his contract and very detailed in what they were going to do and what the costs would be.  Everything was on target and we felt we got a fantastic job done for a fair price.  A previous landscaper (Michael Goodman Landscaping of Barrington) installed our very long retaining wall several years ago but due to his lack of knowledge and poor management of his crew, it collapsed, TWICE!  This time it was done the way it's supposed to be done.  We plan to hire Prairie's Hardscapes for Phase 2 of our master landscaping plan.
