Private Workout Plano Texas Staff negligence; Client injury; Inappropriate fitness service for older clientele PLANO, Texas

I am a 69 yr old woman who has recently had a knee replacement. In summer 2011 I bought Groupon for discounted services at Private Workout, Plano, TX. On redeeming my Groupon, Private Workout "hard sold" me to apply the Groupon to the purchase of a full membership -- instead of using the Groupon for the purpose for which I purchased it.

I started workouts in about July or Aug 2011. I was "instructed" how to use equipment only once -- during my first workout. By the 3rd or 4th week, I had sustained a significant injury to my left iliotibial band as a result of workout routines (assigned by staff) that were inappropriate -- too rigorous -- for my age and health status (I'd had a knee replacement only 9 mos prior). (Private Workout staff were aware of both 1) my age and 2) my recent knee replacement.) In addn 1) I had been inadequately oriented and instructed in performing the workouts and 2) "allowed" only 100 seconds to set up, complete & record results of workout for each piece of equipment -- much too little time for older adults to safely perform these tasks.  

On advice of my physician, I discontinued workouts starting Sept 2011. From Sept through Dec I've suffered significant pain. It has taken approx 4 mos for the IT band to heal & pain caused by the injury to abate. My physician has now prescribed physical therapy to help alleviate the damage and to speed my recovery.

My conclusion -- If you are an older adult, the very fast pace & lack of instruction & supervision in using fitness equipment at Private Workout could be dangerous to your health. I'd recommend careful consideration before joining this gym. I'd also watch out for their "hard sell" tactics.
