The Nevada attorney general wants to shut down a local car repair franchise.

The Channel 8 I-Team was the first to expose the shady business practices uncovered during the A.G.'s investigation of four Purrfect Auto locations. Now, the case expands to include seven more shops.

Has an auto repair shop ever ripped you off? The I-Team wants to know.

The I-Team rode along with the attorney general's Bureau of Consumer Protection during its undercover sting of four Purrfect Auto locations last November. Since then the case has evolved to include a total of 11 locations linked, according to the attorney general, by a common controller and a common scheme.

The scheme lures customers to the franchise with low-cost services and then up-sells unnecessary parts and repairs that are never installed or performed.

In an amended complaint filed Tuesday afternoon, the state alleges an operations model that requires the locations to "up-sell" to a minimum of 6 out of every 10 customers. It also accuses the franchise of selling parts it never had in stock.

During the A.G.'s undercover sting, the I-Team's hidden cameras caught four Purrfect Auto locations failing to perform contracted work. Since the story aired, the state has logged more than 250 consumer complaints and now believes fraud was the rule and not the exception at 11 Purrfect Auto locations.

Kathleen Delaney, with the Nevada Attorney General's Office, said, "The evidence is very clear to us from the sheer volume of complaints and from the evidence we've collected so far, is anything but an anomaly, that these actions by these locations is a concerted effort by these locations to defraud the public and to maximize profitability."

In order to protect the public the state has asked the court to shut down the shops and to require them to pay civil penalties and restitution. That means to those who have already filed complaints with the Bureau of Consumer Protection, you may one day get your money back.

If you believe you've been ripped off, you can share your story with the state.

The I-Team also attempted to contact a representative for Purrfect Auto, but have not yet received a response.

MODERN DAY SLAVES IN AMERICA

AUTHOR: heidi - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 11, 2010

I am so sorry that you feel sorry for these employees. And even more sorry that you are naive enough to think that the Franchiser is the problem here.It is one man that controls these Purrfect Autos..his name is Shafik Hirji...Judy Pham is his wife as well. They are the master minds behind everything. I will bet you did not now that each and every one of these employees work 6 days a week and 10 hours a day for the modern day slaver price of just $350.00 a week? Not one of these employees pays taxes, and neither does Shafik. I know this for a fact. They do not have workmans comp, nor does he offer any health care. he does not give you a 30 minute break and if you want 2 15 minute breaks, he will threaten to fire you!

I don't agree that all 11 stores should be closed.

I too have experienced a problem with the Purrfect Auto on Eastern in Henderson, Nevada and the one on Sunset in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, I love the one at Silverado Ranch & Bermuda. The manager and staff at the Silverado Ranch & Bermuda location have always been honest and helpful. I have never felt ripped off or had any problems with my car after they have worked on it. They have always performed the work I asked them to do in a timely and professional manner and have never used any high pressure tactics to sell more work or parts. I have been going to this location since it opened approximately 6 years ago. I hope that the investigation does not result in the closure of the Silverado Ranch & Bermuda location. I will be very disappointed and I feel bad for the workers there who I feel are going to be wrongly judged based on the actions of other franchisees.
