I was pumping gas at QT today 4-23-04 around 11:30 a.m. I was watching the pump closely. The amount went right to 5 when i squeezed the handle even though no gas had come out yet.

I looked online when I came home and I see this is happening in other states also. It is called pump jumping. I am going to go to another gas station and see if the amount starts at 1. Then I will go back to QT and when it starts at 5 I will bring someone out to the pump that works there.

As for getting any money back I'm not sure what to do. That QT is the only place I have been getting gas at ever since they have opened a few years ago.

I just want others to be aware. The gas prices are high enough without QT skimming an extra 5 worth off the top of everyone that goes there.

Quiktrip does more than ripoff consumers

AUTHOR: Charles - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 19, 2009

Quiktrip rips off consumers and employees. Quiktrip managers violates work rule laws and doesn't pay for all time worked. Know this for a fact as I worked for them before. Despite complaints regarding unpaid compensation QT insists some hourly employees perform on the job duties without compensation. Such as travel time for repairing store equipment, time spent dealing with after hours complaints etc. Those who complain are pressured to quit or let go for some frivolous reason.

Wow. Its five cents. A whole nickel!!!

AUTHOR: Cambriabowman - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 17, 2008

First of all, working at QT, I know this happens at least once a week. And its not because QT wants to make money. They are a multi-billion dollar company, five cents won't make a difference. This happens usually because of a pump malfunction. Also, if you go inside, the person at the register will give you your WHOLE NICKEL back, I promise. And what are you going to do with this nickel? Probably lose it in your car, so there you go, way to complain about nothing.

3 quick notes...

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 19, 2007

1. The link in the post above leads to an article that is 9 years old.

2. As noted by another ROR user, QuickTrip is not the same as QuikTrip (QT).

3. The gas left over in the hose after you use it has been paid for by you. The amount of gas a customer purchases is measured inside the pump, not at the end of the hose. If you do not drain the hose you are leaving gas you paid for in it. The offset is the previous customer probably did not drain the hose, so you get the left over gas they paid for. I cannot imagine it being very much though.

Fuel Pump 'Jumping'

AUTHOR: Dan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 19, 2007

I did work at a gas station several years ago where pump jumping was more prevelant. What happens is the previous customer finishes pumping gas and turns off the pump. Then they drain the pump hose of the last few ounces of fuel - at today's prices, 5 cents isn't much fuel, but it's there. So you wind up paying for their extra fuel.

Pump design should have the shutoff valve at the pump end of the hose, not at the dispenser end - but that means the next customer would get the 5 cents of fuel you paid for but left in the hose.

I would imagine that country wide, a few cents here, a few cents there would accumulate to several million dollars to the oil companies.

They will be glad to give your 5 cent back

AUTHOR: Ryan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 19, 2007

All you have to do is go to the person behind the counter and they will be glad to give your money back to you. I work with the company as a Facility Support Tech, mantenance man, when that happened it was probably a cool night and you just happened to be the first person to pump on that particular line out of the four the store has.

problem with pump is most likely not intentional.

AUTHOR: Jason - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 19, 2005

I say this because you mention that this is the only station you've ever gone to and yet this has only happened once. I work at a gas station and that does happens from time to time when the pumps are cold. The colder it is the more frequently it occurs. At the most, this happens an average of twice a day. Usually it's only 1 or 2 cents, sometimes more, but even at five cents that would only add up to an extra profit of $36.50 a year. Not really worth the risk of getting caught, which is an almost certainty. So unless this happens every time you get gas there I wouldn't think too much of it. If it happens again, just make them aware of it, and I'm sure they will be more than happy to not charge you the five cents.
