on sunday june 17 i pulled into the quick stop #94 to get gas before i went home. i still had a quarter tank left but the gas is cheaper in s.j. than where i live. after pumping the gas i realized that the 42.00 was the most i have ever seen my hond civic take. i looked at the volume which said i pumped 13.128 gallons of gas. bone dry empty the honda gas tank can only take 13.2 gallons.

if i was that low not only would my gas gage read empty, instead of a quater full, the low gas light would have been on for quite a while.the honda civic is a 2001 model and the low gas light goes on early but with a quater tank of gas in the car it shouln't come on witch it wasn't.i talked to the attendent and he said to call the owner jeff. i called jeff and jeff said the city takes care of that.

i dont know how long the volume counter on that gas pump has been miscounting but it should be repaired. i'm sure i'm not the only one that this is happing to but most people might not notice.

#2 Consumer Comment

David, you're probably correct.

AUTHOR: Mike - (Canada)

Your Honda Civic takes a max 13.2 gallons as you correctly stated, David. The prior respondent mistakenly gave the capacity for an Accord.

This same situation has happened to me too but I just made a point of not returning to the same gas station. However, when I was last in Australia, I was told it isn't unusual for 20% of the pumps to be inaccurate, so one wouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to figure which way the pumps are "out."

Sickening as it is, more and more misrepresentation and fraud is what we consumers continue to face. If you are really concerned you could lodge a complaint with the appropriate regulating agency, that's as far as you can go. What they then do is anybody's guess.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

How to be sure.

Ok. according to automobilemag a 2001 accord has a 65 liter gas tank which is 17.17 u.s. gallons.

Also, sometimes the sensor in the gas station gets a little funny and as a result, the gas gage will not be as accurate as it used to be.

If there is any doubt, it's easy to check. Simply take a 1 gallon gas can with you to the station and pump 1 gallon into it and check the result. If it's off, contact the regulating agency in your area about it.

Here it's Erie County - the county inspects the gas station pumps for accuracy every 2 years and afixes a certification sticker on the pump.
