On Thursday, February 24, 2005, 100.3fm, WPLY, Y100, was taken off the air without warning by Radio-one. After nearly 12 years at 100.3, Alternative Rock disappeared from the Philadelphia radio landscape. With it went the musical companion of over 500,000 residents of the Delaware Valley.

In the time since Y100 signed on in 1993, the station has hosted more than 150 Sonic Sessions, held 8 FEZtivals and 8 FEASTivals, raised over 400 tons of food and donated more than $400,000 to charity via the Camp Out For Hunger and Sonic Session releases, supported local bands, played more than 1,250,000 songs (and just a few less commercials), and rocked Philadelphia 24/7/365 with more wit, humor, intelligence, and fun than any other station on the dial.

And more importantly, it's been the musical hangout, home, and club for us - over 500,000 Philadelphia area listeners.

Radio-one has been dishonest in their accusations that Y100 was low in ratings, and furthermore lacked the courage to announce anything prior to the demise of Y100.

I believe that radio-one has the intentions of destroying alternative rock music, and is therefore a rip off to alternative rock listeners. Log onto www.y100rocks.com for further details.

low ratings, is probably one of the reasons it is no longer.

I checked the arbitron ratings for WPLY Fm In Philly. For Wo5 they had a rating of 2.6. The hightest rating was WBEB-FM(AC) with a 8.1 and WDAS_FM (Urban AC) 6.7 THAT is probably one of the reasons it is no longer.

Here is an article I found on one of the radio sights.

Y100/Philly Final Trend Rolls

March 1, 2005

The saga of displaced Y100 listeners and staff continues in Philly as the station gets in a final trend today showing WPLY moving up from a 2.5 to a 2.6 Persons 12+. Former-Y100 PD Jim McGuinn is keeping the heat on for resurrecting the Modern Rock format in Philadelphia, but tells FMQB that no corporate radio company has reached out to him yet.

McGuinn was also touting the support of online site Y100Rocks.com, noting the station "is among the most listened to online stations in the world" in only four days. Seeing the response to the Web site, Electric Factory Concerts has handed Y100Rocks.com sponsorship of the April 13 Sum 41/Unwritten Law show in Philadelphia. A rally for Y100 will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. located at JFK Plaza in Philly.

"This is not a stunt, though it is a very compelling story," said McGuinn in an e-mail to the industry asking for artist and personal support. "If we all lose Alternative in Philly, what city will be next? It's not about you or me or anything, except the music, musicians, and fans -- don't let them down."

Meanwhile, Radio One is finally going into spin control with the local media as COO Mary Catherine Sneed discussed reasons behind the permanent move. She also questioned the petition at Y100Rocks.com, asking where that kind of listener support was when it came time to write down the station in Arbitron diaries.

What am I going to listen to in the morning now?!?

AUTHOR: Jenny - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 02, 2005

I am a college student who drives a little over an hour to school every morning and the only morning show I listened to was Y100. I've tried listening to other morning shows since the demise, but all of them suck! I can't believe that they replaced it with a hiphop station!!! WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?!? They obviously have lost it. How is my day going to function properly without hearing the bizzaro file?!?? That was always hilarious.

I hate rap and I can't really listen to bubble-gum pop all the time...this station had the kind of music that I loved. They just pissed off an entire population that listen to somewhat angry music, hehehe.

I'M ANGRY NOW! But, I guess the thing that got me the most was that, one day I'm listening to the station, and then the next day I turned my radio on and all I heard was rap...I didn't know what to do!!! I never realized how valuable a station was until I lost it.....I promised myself I wouldn't cry :( Thanks for listening
