I received a call from Cash Loan USA a little after noon yesterday, while at work, July 7, 2016. The man, supposedly named Ralph/Rob had a thick accent (which should've red flagged it right away). They told me I was approved for a $5,000 loan. The caller then asked how much would I like to borrow. I initially said $350, but once he told me that the least amount I could borrow was $2,000 I decided to go along with it. He told me that my payment would be $183 a month for a year and that my total pay out would be $2,200. He then asked me for my banking account information. I gave it to him. He told me that the money would be on my account between 12am-6am. He also told me that in order to make sure I was the only person with access to the account I'd have to send the money back to their company via Money Gram by 8am, then shortly after I would then receive my loan. Sure enough, on my last lunch break around 8:15, the money was listed as pending. Now it is July 8, 2016 and I've tried calling them on numerous occasions. I've left 2 voicemails and two text messages and still haven't receivd an answer. My account is locked and I cannot access my funds and/or theirs. Little did they know I only had $0.73 in the account, so thank goodness they couldn't access more of my money. Now listen, I've never had a loan before, I don't have any credit, and I just didn't think it was a scam. I'm only 20, and yes I should've been more careful, but that doesn't give them the right to scam people.

Of course its a scam!

You are not understanding how these scams work.  There is no loan. They call you and offer you money over the phone and you think it is legitimate? No, it's not legitimate. Lenders don't ask you to wire funds through Money Gram or Western Union or pre-paid card before you get the loan. That is the main tip that it is a scam. Once they receive your funds the 'pending' deposit will dissappear.

The other thing you are not understanding is that your balance at the bank can go below zero. You gave your bank account info to a stranger over the phone - not smart. You need to change your bank account so that these scammers don't reach in and pull out funds at some future date (entirely possible and probable).

There are entire economies that operate on the scammers funds in some third world countries. It is up to you as a consumer to be much more vigilent about your own money. There is no safety net that will return scammed funds to you. Go to the FTC(dot)gov website and read up on popular scams so you don't fall for another one in the future. After all - you are the one that loses when you are scammed. The scammers just move on to the next person and don't have any penalties to pay.
