Had I known about this website, I never would have allowed these people into my home to begin with.

Like other reports here, I got the same line about bringing my hot water heater up to code. Judging by previous comments here, and my own experience, I too have been taken by this company. The worst part of this, other than having to pay $700 to bring my plumbing "up to code" is that the two of the plumbers, who are previously reported here, left a gas connection unchecked and not tightened!

I should have known better than to continue to have this company work in my home. When they presented me with a quote for the work to be done and I wasn't comfortable with it, I excused myself and went to another room to call American Home Shield. While I was on hold with AHS, they told my wife they didn't have time to wait. They proceeded to their truck and before they left, walked back to my front porch, opened my front door and threw the description of work on the floor of my foyer while no one was around.

After speaking to a representative at AHS who had about as much personality as a dead fish, and really couldn't care less about a client who had been with them for 16 years, I decided that since they had me by the short ones because of my financial situation, I had to call Rescue Rooter back to do the work.

While they were installing this new water heater, they twisted other pipes and had to fix at least three connections and holes they had made. I am still not conviced they fixed them correctly. I asked one of the plumbers what they were doing on the third splice of this copper pipe when they installed a compression fitting. The plumber told me because he was "tired of screwing it up".

They told me at the time that I would probably smell some gas because of the disconnecting and reconnecting of the gas line and a new gas valve. I didn't think much of the statement and kept my windows open that night because the smell was pretty bad. When I woke the next morning and was getting ready for work, the smell was still pretty bad, so I opened more windows, even though the temperature outside was around 30. Included in these windows were the ones in my basement where the unit is housed, and also where I have someone living down there full time.

When I came home for lunch and opened the garage door, the smell of gas nearly knocked me over. At that point I realized something wasn't right. I went to the basement to check with some hot water and soap in a bowl to check the connections on the new unit. Where they had installed a new valve and flex pipe, the connection was loose and gas was coming out so fast that you could hear it hissing. No need for liquid to test the connections! So I immediately shut off the valve and called Rescue Rooter. The lady that answered the phone was pleasant and said she would send someone out right away. I might mention that at NO time did she ever suggest that I turn OFF the gas!!!!

Suffice it to say, had I started my fireplace, or lit a cigarette, the house might not be here anymore, and it could certainly have killed someone. Thank goodness no one in my family smokes.

I am certain there will be no response from either Rescue Rooter or AHS on this issue. I can only hope that when they really do blow up someone's house, there will be trail of negligence posted so that the legal system can prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
