Purchased a 2003 suzuki aerio in September. Buy here, pay here, $150 every 2 weeks, sounds great, but huge catch. Vehicle had problems from the beginning - had to keep putting water in the tank to avoid it overheating; installed new radiator and temperature sensor. Still didn't work, took it to suzuki on Saturday and the head gasket was gone will cost $2,571 (without tax to repair); Suzuki said go back to the person you bought it from, this has been an ongoing problem. The nasty man, along with his nasty wife and nasty daughter would do nothing. Basically blamed me for driving the car while it was overheating. This is the second time he screwed me. Purchased a Mazda MPV in 2005, within 4 days noticed it wasn't moving correctly (test drove it with no gas), then found out it needed new transmission.
My fault, said I wouldn't go back to him again, then gave the man the benefit of the doubt, and he did it to me again.

In addition to not going back to someone who has ripped you off in the past, there's one more thing you can do to keep this from happening again. A lot of the cars you find at buy here, pay here lots are so much rolling junk. Due to the nature of the business, you know ahead of time that they're going to charge more than the car is worth AND stick you with high interest payments. If you're resigned to getting into such a deal, you should at least make sure that your money is buying something that will be usable.
Before buying any used car from anywhere, take it to a trusted mechanic and have it checked out. Major problems like a blown head gasket or dying transmission will be easily detectable by a competent mechanic. Having the car checked out AFTER you sign on the dotted line is not going to help. By then, you own whatever problems they find.
Do not rely on promises made by a used car salesman that the car has been "inspected", or one of those worthless 3rd party warranties to protect you. There's no better protection than having a prospective purchase thoroughly examined by a competent mechanic that has no interest in the deal.
