An account was turned over to Alliance One (recently aquired TRIAD along with a number of other collection companies) from Chase bank. I discovered this when simultaneously (on the same day!)I received a letter, a voice mail (my answering machine identifies me by name so the individual knew she had the right number)left at my home (which I intended to call from my office on my lunch break)and received a call from a neighbor stating that "melissa" from Alliance One called and said she was looking for you because there was an account we were having trouble with"!

Help, help, can they really call my neighbors? I've called Alliance now 4 times trying to speak to someone in authority but to no avail, only able to leave messages and I've called "Melissa" leaving a voice mail to: 1. Cease contacting any more neighbors and 2.Asking for a complete list of all neighbors contacted. I AM SO EMBARASSED.

What are my options? After a being very ill (including a close brush with death) I fell behind in my payments. In order to make small monthly payments I cancelled my health insurance, but was turned over anyway with Chase telling me "we're obligated by law to charge off accounts at 7 months".

They can't do it excessively and are usually punished by the company for these "mistakes".

I worked at TRIADvantage when GMAC sold Triad to AllianceOne. Next, Collectors can call any 3rd party they like and leave msgs or ask for info. They can't do it excessively and are usually punished by the company for these "mistakes". Triad has a compliance officer that listens to your calls at any given time. And i've known people who were fired for braking the law.
Also, They don't need to furnish you with info regarding who they called. They only need to give you the info regarding the debt(i.e. Amount owed, To whom). Calling them will not get them to stop calling. They will continue to call unless 1 of 3 things happens: 1. You pay. Simplest easiest way. You owe the money. Just Pay. 2.The account is returned back to the client for "further action". Or 3. You write a cease and desist letter. This only stops the calls. They can still mail you things and after they recieve the letter they can still call you 1 more time to inform you of the amount owed and the intentions of the collector after they hang up.

Also, Charging Off a debt doesn't mean collections will continue. In fact a lot of companies just sell them to other agencies. Who then try to collect from you. But the point is the damage is done. A charge off goes on your report and doesn'tleave after you pay it off.
Good luck
