I was a freelancer on Guru.com and was hired by Serge Butman to re-write the text on his website for a coffee catering service, www.aromaexpress.ca. After he was pleased with the work (though didn't use all my suggestions), I forgot to use Guru's Escrow system and instead invoiced him . He never paid. I called and emailed numerous times over a few months and what really ticked me off- the reason I'm posting online- were the lies. Twice he emailed saying said he would take care of it asap and, the last time I heard from him, he wrote saying that it was paid and would get the proof from his bookkeeper. No proof, payment, or further contact came, even after I warned him that I would turn to the Internet and that he's messing with the wrong guy. (I also warned him that I would make a scene by showing up at his business or at one of his events, but it's been hard locating him.)
By using Guru's invoicing they were unable to help. Though they did write me that Serge "is on thin ice" so clearly this action with me was not an exception. If you're a freelancer anywhere, make sure to use a fool-proof, escrow-type of payment system or just think twice. Same for anyone else. If he cheated me over a small invoice, what does it say about his general integrity? On Guru, Serge Butman was also listed as Zalman Group (aka Group Zalman). He now has a US presence under a website address of aromacoffeecatering.

Nothing was shown here, which would've been easy to do and would've cleared his name. Mentioning Guru's escrow at this point was equally false because a job can't switch to escrow and Guru can't do anything after it was invoiced.
Already a while ago, the small amount of money involved was not worth my time, but the justice was. While full justice was not attained in terms of getting paid, at least he felt the consequences.

Post a scree shot, no way, I emailed you a few weeks back when you threatened me verbally. Why should I continue this game. I hired you through Guru I will let Guru decide. I will once again FOR THE SECOND TIME, pay your invoice but this time, I will place it in escrow with GURU and will only release those funds when you delete these postings.

This freelancer for the past month has been leaving threatening phone calls, has been harassing us by email (anyone interested I still have a copy of the threat he made against me and my company) I have proof that we paid him, worst I checked with paypal and the transfer was completed the same day he "completed" the work. I won't say anything to hurt his credibility but the work he says he did was not worth a third of what I paid him - true we used it but I had someone else edit his work.
I refused to give into his threats and blackmail. WE PAID HIM and anyone who wants proof I will share it with him.
Because of the internet I may have to give in and pay him again but if it comes to this I will open a police complaint for harressement, blackmail and personal threats.
