A young man approached a friend and I (we're both women) in a shopping mall in Long Island New York. He said he was enrolled in a contest through a company called Services Unlimited Plus. He was selling cheap magazine subscriptions that he explained would aquire him "points". These "points" would win him a chance to be on MTV's Real World. It didn't really make any sense.

He went through a lot of phony chatter about how he was actually from Florida and he was visiting a buddy and did we know any good parties, and oh you have such lovely hair. he kept giving us the "high-five". We chipped in both our money and bought a subscription to a magazine that still hasn't been delivered after 3 months. At one point, I thought I didn't have enough cash on me so the guy even suggested that we just charge a gift certificate from a store to pay for the subscription. We ended up giving him cash though.

The website for this company is obviously a front. It contains no usable information and it's very vague. The reciept we got from the guy is also useless. It says a cancellation notice can be mailed in, but we didn't even get the guy's name! Looking back, we both feel stupid.

I wish I knew where the money is going to. They're a scam. Tell everyone to stay away.

some insight

AUTHOR: Rachelle - (U.S.A.)

Hey Carol,
I used to work for SUP. Though I agree with "Joy" that the simplest solution is just to use the information on your receipt, I must tell you that since I left that crew I periodically check back on the internet to read up on their recent scandals and to look at their website to see how many people that I know have rejoined it and such, and "Joy" has shown up over the years as the mighty all-knowing supporter of SUP. It's fascinating to me that after having one experience with the company, she made it her life mission to preach their sanctity and harrangue people such as yourself. Seeing her pop up again after all this time prompted me to register and jump on here too.

I remember the "high-five's" you mentioned. There was one red-headed boy in particular named Lawrence that seemed particularly fond of that maneuver, but in my recollection he didn't canvas malls.

As to the impressive stories... - would you have wanted to help any other way? There are all kinds of canvases those kids use, it just depends on which lie they can pull off the best. The truth isn't nearly as compelling. In actuallity, there pretty much is a contest, but it's only for motivation to bring the company more money, and to have a legit base for building lies to go with it. It's the owner of the company that's running it. Not a school, or class, or club, or charity. If an agent does get a bunch of points they can get money or go somewhere. The problem is getting the points in a certain amount of time and hoping she's feeling in a fair mood to award you.

The whole thing is very sad and pathetic, and though I know that I haven't really given you anything helpful I just wanted to let you know that there are so many people that feel just as cheated as you. The only thing I've really seen over all this time is when a bunch of people filed complaints with the Attorney General in Illinois in 2002 and a court case developed. The website on it is http://travelingsalescrews.info/services%20unlimited%20plus%20illinois%20lawsuit%208.html

the damage I cause

Why did you choose me out of all the other people who made complaints recently? I find that interesting. What was it about me in particular that caused you to act so hostile?

Whatever it was, I'm sorry I caused such a strong reaction and I hope I haven't been too much trouble to you.

You know a lot about this company though, which is more than anyone who has complained can say. I commend you on your simple research skills that none of us had the common sense to persue. Anyway, I have a question: Can you tell me why the story that the sales people give to the customer differs in every sales instance? I was told there was an MTV contest, others were told of a school sholarship (that when researched later didn't even exist) or a vacation contest or money for books...Why do the sales people have to lie to sell their product?

Looking Back Makes You Feel Stupid, Try Looking Forward

AUTHOR: Joy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 30, 2004

Carol,

Of course looking back makes you feel stupid, looking at your current situation makes me believe that you actually are stupid. You have fallen into the same lazy, self-pitying trap that the rest of the people who complain on this site have fallen into. You do not mention even attempting to contact the company. You took the time to visit their website, you took the time to write your little complaint, but you didn't take the time to send a quick e-mail to the address that is clearly posted on the first page of the website or to make a phone call to the toll-free number that is listed on your receipt. I have been defending this company for some time now because I was in a similar situation, and took just a bit of time to contact the company. What I got was the best service that I have ever received from a company of any kind.

Looking back on your experience shouldn't make you feel stupid. However, you should feel stupid about complaining about your problems on this site when it will do nothing to help your situation. Just like all of these other people, you have chosen not to take responsibility for your actions; instead you have decided to give the company a bad name when it may not be their fault at all. So go ahead and contact the company, their phone number is 1-800-536-4704 and their e-mail address is contact@servicesunlimitedplus.com. I would suggest that you stop feeling stupid and start acting smart, lest you become stupid.

After you take the initiative to contact the company, and you have reached a resolution why don't you come back to this site where you complained so abruptly and tell everyone how stupid you feel then.
