Well it's been five years since the original report and I'm sorry to say that not much has changed, except that shawn Bedard now lives in Hawaii renting Maui vista condos. I just left an apartment rented to me by shawn Bedard and my story is similar. Even though he is in Hawaii he still manages to keep his reputation as a seedy vermont landlord.

When we moved in our apartment was also a mess and we said we would clean it if they would take $200 off our first month. I wish we took a closer look! There was rotting food in the oven, fish guts in the fridge, etc. gross!

On top of that longmeadow village apartments look like they were built in a day. The outlets are upside down, the appliances are old and outdated and the property is severely neglected. My step dad inspects houses for the bank and when he walked through the place he told me that if I called a safety officer to inspect the place it would not pass. There was a hole with wires sticking out of it in one of the rooms where a smoke detector should have been. When I contacted the property manager asking him to repair the hole and get a smoke detector he told me to get one myself, install it and give him the receipt! A bit strange wouldn't you say?

When we moved in the garage was broken and we were told it would be fixed. We were there for two years and asked multiple times for it to be fixed. When we moved out the garage door was so rotted that we could barely open it without it falling apart!

When we gave our notice his lease had typos in it and it said to give thirty days notice. Elsewhere in the document it also sai sixty days notice. We gave him thirty dys notice as written in his lease and he tried to make us pay extra for not giving sixty days notice!

He agreed that his lease had errors and he wouldn't charge me but when we got our security deposit back it was only $150 from a $1200 deposit! He charged me for the smoke detectors not being there as well as many other things that were a direct result of his negligence. Now he won't return my calls! He stole $1000 from me basically and I down want this to happen to others. He's doing very well for himself openin up condos, sellin properties left and right with the hard earned money from his tenants.

I've been screwe over by landlords before but this is the worst of them all. Shawn Bedard, shame on you!

Shawn Bedard is a kind and fair landlord who is no more "an obvious slum lord" than any other landlord in Burlington, VT.  It is very difficult to find any good apartments in Burlington because the demand is so much higher than the supply; I agree that there are many unethical landlords in Burlington who rip off their tenants and most definitely target UVM students with wealthy out-of-state parents.  Shawn only owns and rents two buildings in Burlington, which are adjacent and share a parking lot and a dumpster on North Union Street.  They are both two of the most well taken care of properties on North Union street, which is always covered in trash (on the road and sidewalks).  Shawn was always friendly and professional, and was very helpful always, even when the heat broke down in the middle of the night.  He got a repairman to my house not only within half an hour, but at 11 pm.  I rented the same studio apartment as was described in the original report and was very happy with it, compared to several other apartments in Burlington that I've lived in, and many dozens of apartments I toured.  The majority of Shawn's tenants stay for consecutive year leases, and all have reported to me that Shawn Bedard's rental rates and amenities are very fair by Burlington's standards.  After renting from four different landlords in Burlington, I have decided to get back into contact with Shawn Bedard so I can move back into said apartment in June 2010.  If Shawn had more properties available in Burlington, I would recommend him to everyone I know.  I want to make sure Shawn Bedard's reputation as a landlord stays untainted because he deserves recognition for his fair and ethical practices.
